Building letters and numbers in a whole new way! 🧱🔤

The children worked together using large Duplo blocks to trace and recreate the letters and numbers found on their colourful foam mats. As they followed each shape, they practiced letter and number recognition, early literacy and numeracy skills, spatial awareness, problem-solving, and fine motor development.

Working side by side also encouraged teamwork, communication, sharing, and cooperation as they helped one another complete each letter and number.

Building big ideas, one block at a time! 🧱✨

The children worked together to create tall towers, large structures, and their own unique building designs using colourful cardboard blocks. As they built, they were exploring early STEM concepts such as balance, size, shape, stability, and problem-solving while also strengthening creativity and spatial awareness.

This activity also encouraged so many important social skills as the children shared materials, took turns, communicated their ideas, worked together, and figured out how to make their structures stronger.

We can see so much learning through simple activities that include building, experimenting, knocking it down, and trying again!

Today, on September 30th, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and the message that Every Child Matters.

As educators and caregivers, we have an important role in helping children grow with kindness, respect, empathy, and an understanding that every child deserves to feel safe, valued, loved, and heard.

Today we honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and Indigenous communities whose experiences and stories continue to matter. We also recognize that learning, listening, and reflection should continue beyond just one day.

Cupcake Counting & Matching! 🧁

The children practiced their early math skills with this fun cupcake matching activity! They matched each numbered cupcake bottom with the correct cupcake top, using the pictures of the hands as a visual guide to help them recognize and count each number.

Using fingers to represent quantities gives children a concrete way to understand what numbers actually mean, while also building number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, counting skills, visual matching, and problem-solving. Finding the correct cupcake pieces also encouraged focus and careful observation.

The children explored the beauty and textures of nature through a leaf rubbing activity! By placing leaves underneath the paper and rubbing crayons over top, they were able to reveal the unique shapes, veins, and patterns hidden in each leaf.

Sorting, counting, and matching through play 🍎🍌🍇

For toddlers and younger children, sorting activities are a simple way to build important early learning skills. At first, children may need some assistance, modelling, and lots of talking through the activity together. Using familiar objects, such as fruits that they recognize, can make the learning feel more meaningful and help children understand the activity better.

As children sort, match, count, and identify the different fruits, they are practicing skills such as colour recognition, early number concepts, one-to-one counting, visual discrimination, language development, and problem-solving. These skills will continue to become important as children head off to kindergarten and begin exploring early math concepts in more depth.

Practicing these skills at a young age helps children begin to notice similarities and differences, understand how objects can be grouped, and make connections between what they see and the words or numbers used to describe them.

With practice and support, activities like this can help build a strong foundation for later math skills, including patterns, classification, comparing, counting, and eventually more complex problem-solving.

The best part is that for toddlers, all of this learning can happen through simple, hands-on play.
