Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development proposes that children move through four distinct, universal stages—sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational—driven by biological maturation and environmental interaction. Children act as active "little scientists," constructing understanding through schemas, assimilation, and accommodation.

Key Concepts in Piaget's Theory

* Schemas: Mental frameworks or templates used to organize information.

* Assimilation: Fitting new information into existing schemas.

* Accommodation:Altering existing schemas to fit new information

* Equilibration: The balance between assimilation and accommodation.

Piaget’s Four Stages of Cognitive Development-

Sensorimotor Stage (Birth–2 years):
Children learn about the world through senses and motor actions. A major achievement is object permanence, the understanding that objects continue to exist even when hidden.

Preoperational Stage (2–7 years):
Children develop symbolic thought, language, and imagination, but thinking is egocentric and lacks logical reasoning.

Concrete Operational Stage (7–11 years):
Logical, concrete reasoning develops. Children understand concepts like conservation (quantity remains the same despite shape changes) and categorization.

Formal Operational Stage (12+ years):
Adolescents develop the capacity for abstract thought, logical reasoning, and hypothetical thinking.

Piaget’s work highlighted that children think differently than adults, moving from basic reflexes to complex, abstract reasoning through these structured stages.

Setting up my Home Away From Home, Day 1 👩🏻‍🏫 UPDATE: I am incredibly humbled and in awe of the traction this post has made! For those who are new to my account, I am so grateful you are here and I look forward to sharing about my classroom and more! 💞 The Burning Question: 💰 Where did this all come from? ❤️: The parent community in my district is 💪 and I am immensely grateful for all of the support that I receive each year from our school PTA and the parents of my students. 🙋🏻‍♀️: As many teachers, I dip into my own pockets and have spent thousands upon thousands for materials, furniture, and more. This is not a humble brag. My goal is to be transparent, as some of you have asked “how much” I have spent, so that there is more awareness about the poorly funded classrooms around our country and the teachers who will stretch their own funds to make a classroom a “home” for their students. 🙌: I am deeply grateful to have developed connections and collaborative relationships with companies that have gifted me items that I would not be able to supply myself. 💻: Each school year I create a project on Donors Choose. This can be a great resource for teachers and a great opportunity to clear some of those big ticket items off your wish list. ✍️: I have recently started keeping an eye out for grants and apply wherever it is applicable. This can be time consuming, but another option to consider. ✨ The comments are so appreciated! I am digging my way through, while also prepping for the start of school and hope to respond soon. 🙏

The playground is ready for the children to come out and enjoy the beautiful summer days. Our spacious playground provides a safe environment for the children to enhance their gross motor skills while getting fresh air. The children love riding the tricycles and enjoying all the different activities and toys set out by our qualified staff.

We are thrilled to announce our partnership with .ca. We have joined forces in a shared mission to provide more inclusive opportunity to children with exceptional needs. .ca offers a range of programs that are specifically designed for children who may find fitting into mainstream extracurriculars challenging or even impossible. Each of the programs embed the fundamentals of .ca, which are: learning and working with others, making friends, and keeping friends. The programs are run by experienced Special Education teachers, giving parents peace of mind knowing their child is having fun while getting the support they need, and bonus: the parent enjoys a well deserved break.
