“How do I choose the right purebreed for me? Does this breed suit my lifestyle?”

As we discussed in previous posts, their are many different breeds of dog for the right people with the right breed groups to match them.
for instance maybe your a farmer and what a herding dog that’s reliable for working with livestock and eager to please? Look no further then the German shepherd! Or maybe you want a sporting dog for hunting that can also be a great family companion? Get a Labrador retriever! Or even maybe you want a guard dog or a dog that’s good for weight pulling sports? Rottweiler!.
All of the breeds listed above all belong to their respective groups for a trained purpose and given that factor it is always recommended to make sure you do your research, you should be able to “need this dog” not just because “I want this dog”. Make sure you can handle not only the dogs temperament but also: it’s specific training requirements, it’s diet the breeder recommends, potential vet bills/pet insurance plans etc. for many people they would argue “if you want something earn it” and while this may seem truly admirable you also need to take into consideration “am I doing enough?” or “should I do more? and look into this more?” things to ask yourself that myself and many other canine enthusiasts deem necessary for great results during canine ownership.

“Purebred dog vs mixed breed or working line cross, how are they different? which is right for you?

There are many different breeds for the right people, here on the left we have a purebred showline American Bully (not to be confused with the APBT) and on the right a working line cross that is a “mailincollie” a purpose bred cross consisting of the 2 different breed parent dogs being you guessed it, Belgian Malinois/Border Collie.
A showline dog is the option that is ideal for most people who just want a “pet dog” or “family dog” given their specific temperament traits that are engrained into them with time and training, whereas people who want a more active, working oriented dog might be more suited to go for a working line purebred or cross for more specific results.
However common mixed breeds or “mutts” you see at a shelter or an online ad posting are more often then not backyard bred dogs with unpredictable temperaments depending on mix and percentage of mix, very possible health issues (no proper health testing being a big factor) and of course the dog simple having no true purpose (not bred for show or work but rather “pet quality”) They are considered highly unethical and Not recommended unless from a shelter or rescue therefore not directly supporting BYB. No registered or responsible breeder would give just anyone a dog without the proper process in place, let them rehome the dog without consent or breed the dog without rights/permission.

“But what about the price?”

A common and repeated question, this is often not that difficult for the right person willing to work to achieve getting the dog of their dreams, many people often say
“show dogs/registered bred dogs
are too expensive” and then get from a byb simply because “it’s cheaper” without realizing more often then not a true purebred quality dog is similar to the everyday basic expense “you get what you pay for for true quality” and let’s not forget many registered breeders will offer pet insurance plans with your purchase of their puppy from their litter to help make up for potential vet bills etc.

“What is a breed standard?, are the standards for breeds different in other kennel clubs?”

In short, a breed standard is what describes the dog’s purebred physical and mental traits and qualities on how to the breed should look and act, what colours It’s supposed to come in, how it’s muscular figure and structure should look overall, if a dog does not retain any of these pure qualities then it is then considered “off standard” or in many cases a “mutt”. a great example here being Labrador retrievers! Under all kennel clubs labs only come in 3 colours, black, yellow, and chocolate/brown no exceptions are to ever be made and the same can be said for how labs look In terms of muscular shape, weight, and facial features although this can very from different kennel clubs breed standards being slightly different from each other and of course the different types of purpose bred lines in purebred dogs or “showline vs working line” if you will or even working line crosses which most of the time don’t require a breed standard.

“What is a kennel club?, how many are there?, how are they similar?, how are they different?” Part 1

The united kennel club better known as “UKC” for short, was founded on April 4th 1873, the UKC is responsible for the foundation of the 7 major dog groups per breed and ethical breeding of modern purebred dogs we know today. From the UKC we got many of the things we have today in the modern dog world, such as dog shows, agility/sports, working purebred dogs to then show dogs all of which of course involve purebred quality standards.

Over many years it hasn’t just been the UKC, other kennel clubs were formed in other countries, for example in America there is the American kennel club or “AKC” for short, while here in Canada we have the Canadian kennel club or “CKC” there is also the European kennel club. All of which host the same base dog breeds for their respective groups, so for example: herding: German shepherd dog, Australian Shepherd, Border Collie.
While each club may have most of the same breeds, there are however many different lesser known or “unpopular” breeds per club that aren’t all recognized in other clubs all of which have their own similar or drastically different breed standards for some of the same breeds.
