Raisins that refuse to sit still.

The Sunset Room dropped a handful into fizzy water this week and watched them rise, hover for a moment, and sink again, over and over, entirely on their own. That was all it took to open up a proper conversation about solids, liquids and gases, and every child wanted a turn watching their own raisin make the trip.

The rest of the week went into days of the week, counting, and steady practice spelling names. Busy days in that room at the moment. There is always time for something that bubbles.

The microphone came out, and so did everybody else.

The children took turns singing for their friends, with a few dance moves worked in along the way. Some needed a gentle nudge to get started. Others needed the microphone prised gently back off them at the end.

Standing up in front of a group is a far bigger deal than it looks when you are four years old. Every turn taken makes the next one easier, and that is the entire reason we do it. Not to produce performers, but so that speaking up in front of other people never becomes the frightening thing it stays for so many adults.

A little fizz, a lot of fun! 🫧🧪

Today we experimented with baking soda and vinegar and watched the bubbles and fizzing reaction happen right before our eyes! The kids had so much fun pouring, mixing, and seeing what would happen. 💛

Floor time in the toddler room, which today mostly meant legs in the air.

Kicking, rolling, wriggling, and a great deal of laughing about all of it. From the outside it looks like nothing much. It is not. Movement like this is how toddlers build core strength, coordination and a sense of where their body sits in space, and every bit of that is groundwork for sitting still at a table, holding a pencil, and climbing a ladder without a second thought later on.

It also gets the wiggles out well before lunch, which on a Tuesday morning counts for just as much.

A picture checklist and a whole room full of things to find.

Fresh from touring the classroom centres, the Sunset Room kids each got a list and set off. There was a great deal of looking under, behind and inside things, and a shout every single time somebody matched a picture on their page to the real thing in front of them.

They kept hunting long after the list was finished, which was rather the point. The fastest way to learn a new space is to go through it looking for something. By the end of the morning they knew that room better than any tour could have managed on its own.
