Randy and I are packed for our trip to the Frostbite Symposium on the weekend. Looking forward to seeing everyone and being a part of this awesome event and having our Wilderness Community come together again after the Rat Root Rendezvous. I believe they may just have a few more registrations open for anyone interested in coming and being a part of Frostbite 2026. The class list is extensive and there is something for everyone.

For all our forest friends.

The photograph is startling. Rows of children bundled in heavy coats and blankets, sitting at desks—in the middle of a snow-covered forest. No walls. No roof. Just trees, winter air, and twenty students learning their lessons while snowflakes drifted onto their papers.
This wasn't punishment. It was medicine.
In 1904, Dr. Bernhard Bendix and school inspector Hermann Neufert stood in the woods outside Berlin and made a radical decision. They would build a school here, among the trees, and fill it with the city's sickest children.
At the turn of the twentieth century, tuberculosis was killing more people than any other disease in Europe and America. The "white death" claimed four hundred fifty Americans every single day. Most victims were young—between fifteen and forty-four years old. Entire families were decimated. Workers who had crowded into industrial cities since the Industrial Revolution lived in dark, cramped, poorly ventilated tenements where the airborne bacteria spread with devastating efficiency.
There was no cure. No vaccine. No antibiotic.
But doctors noticed something. Patients who spent time in mountain sanitariums—breathing fresh air, soaking in sunlight, resting in clean environments—sometimes got better. Not always. But sometimes. And sometimes was better than the death sentence tuberculosis usually delivered.
The question was: what about the children?
Thousands of urban children showed early signs of tuberculosis exposure: anemia, swollen glands, chronic weakness, persistent coughs. They weren't actively sick yet. But in the overcrowded, overheated, poorly ventilated schoolrooms of industrial cities, they were ticking time bombs. One infected child could spread the disease to dozens of classmates.
Bendix and Neufert proposed something audacious. Don't wait for children to get sick. Prevent the illness by changing where and how they learned.
Thus was born the Waldschule für kränkliche Kinder—the "forest school for sickly children."
The first students arrived in Charlottenburg in 1904, many of them so weak they could barely walk the distance from the city. What they found wasn't a traditional school building but a collection of simple wooden structures scattered through the forest. Classes took place outdoors whenever possible. When weather made that impossible, the wooden shelters had enormous windows that remained open even in winter.
The curriculum was revolutionary. Yes, children learned reading, mathematics, and writing. But they also spent hours each day in "cure galleries"—special structures designed to maximize sun exposure. They ate nutritious meals prepared on-site, not the inadequate food most poor urban families could afford. They took mandatory rest periods lying on benches or specially designed chairs, breathing forest air. They exercised, played, and spent more time outdoors in one day than most city children experienced in a month.
The school provided forty square meters per student—twenty times the space allotted in typical Prussian schools.
And something remarkable happened. The children got stronger. Their weight increased. Their color improved. Their chronic coughs disappeared. Their academic performance soared.
Within months, other cities took notice.
By 1907, open air schools had appeared in Belgium, Switzerland, England, Italy, and France. By 1908, the movement reached America, where two pioneering female doctors from Rhode Island—Mary Packard and Ellen Stone, among the first women to graduate from Johns Hopkins Medical School—converted a Providence school building floor into an open-air classroom. They kept the windows open even during brutal New England winters, wrapping children in special "Eskimo sitting bags" that functioned like modern sleeping bags.
Remarkably, not a single child got sick that first winter. The experiment succeeded beyond anyone's hopes.
By 1910, America had sixty-five open air schools. By 1918, that number had grown to one hundred thirty cities. Classes took place on ferries, on rooftops, in parks, in forests. Anywhere children could breathe fresh, moving air while learning.
But the movement was about more than disease prevention.
Progressive educators saw something profound in the open air school model. These weren't just healthier learning environments—they were fundamentally better ones. Children in open air schools weren't confined to rigid rows of desks. They moved freely. They collaborated. They connected with nature. Boys and girls learned together, which was revolutionary for the time. The emphasis on whole-child wellness—physical health, mental development, emotional wellbeing—challenged the traditional view that education meant filling children's minds while ignoring their bodies.
The schools attracted some of the era's most innovative architects. In 1927, Dutch architect Jan Duiker designed a stunning open air school in Amsterdam—a modernist masterpiece of glass, concrete, and light that still functions as a school today. The building was organized around terraced outdoor classrooms where children could learn in sun and fresh air year-round. Every design decision prioritized ventilation, natural light, and connection to the outdoors.
Similar architectural achievements appeared across Europe: the École de plein air de Suresnes near Paris (1932-1935), schools in Copenhagen, buildings in Switzerland and England designed by leading architects who saw these structures as expressions of a new philosophy about childhood, health, and learning.
After World War I, the movement became formalized. The League for Open Air Education, founded in France, organized the first International Congress in Paris in 1922. Similar conferences followed in Belgium (1931), Germany (1936), Italy (1949), and Switzerland (1956). By this point, open air schools weren't just for sick children anymore. They were being built for all students, reflecting a belief that fresh air, sunlight, nature exposure, and physical activity should be central to every child's education, not emergency measures for the ill.
The schools tackled more than tuberculosis. They addressed broader concerns about urban industrialization's effect on childhood. Reformers argued that children raised in crowded, polluted, concrete cities were being deprived of something essential. Nature wasn't a luxury—it was a necessity for healthy development. The human body, they insisted, hadn't evolved to spend childhood indoors under artificial light, breathing recycled air, sitting motionless for hours.
The open air schools proved the point. Children in these programs showed dramatic improvements not just in physical health but in behavior, attention, academic performance, and emotional resilience. They were calmer. More focused. Happier.
Then came the medical breakthrough that changed everything.
In 1944, researchers discovered streptomycin—the first antibiotic effective against tuberculosis. Suddenly, the disease that had terrorized humanity for centuries became treatable. Within a decade, tuberculosis rates plummeted across the developed world. The urgent medical justification for open air schools evaporated.
By the late 1950s, most open air schools had closed or converted to conventional buildings. The elaborate outdoor classrooms, the cure galleries, the forest settings—all seemed unnecessary in an age when a few pills could cure tuberculosis.
But the idea didn't die.
The philosophy behind open air schools—that children need nature, movement, fresh air, and holistic attention to their physical and emotional wellbeing—became embedded in progressive education movements worldwide. The emphasis on outdoor play, school gardens, nature-based learning, forest kindergartens, and experiential education all trace their lineage back to those early twentieth-century reformers who dared to move classrooms into the woods.
Today, forest kindergartens thrive in Germany, Denmark, and Scandinavia. Nature-based preschools are proliferating across America—more than two hundred fifty programs now operate nationwide, most founded within the last decade. The Natural Start Alliance, created in 2013, supports the "dramatic growth in nature-based early childhood education." Surveys show that eight out of ten such programs have waiting lists.
And when COVID-19 forced the world to reconsider how schools transmit airborne disease, educators rediscovered what those 1904 German doctors already knew: fresh air, ventilation, and outdoor learning aren't luxuries. They're necessities.
The pandemic sparked renewed interest in teaching outside. Schools worldwide moved classes to parks, playgrounds, parking lots—anywhere with open air and space. Teachers discovered that students who had struggled with focus indoors became engaged learners outside. Parents who had never questioned the assumption that "school" meant "sitting at indoor desks" suddenly saw alternatives.
The open air schools taught us something our modern world desperately needs to relearn: the artificial separation between "inside" and "outside," between "learning" and "living," between "education" and "health" is just that—artificial.
Children aren't miniature adults who can be warehoused indoors for eight hours daily with no ill effects. They're growing humans who need sunlight, fresh air, movement, and connection to the natural world. Education that ignores their physical and emotional needs in favor of purely academic outcomes isn't better education—it's incomplete education.
The open air schools understood this. They built their entire philosophy around a simple recognition: a healthy child learns better. A child who has moved their body, breathed clean air, eaten nutritious food, and rested properly arrives at their studies prepared to think, focus, and grow.
We called it medicine then. We call it common sense now.
Those 1904 photographs of children learning in the forest weren't documenting a temporary health crisis response. They were capturing a profound truth about what children need—a truth we've spent the past century forgetting and relearning, forgetting and relearning.
The lesson was never about tuberculosis. It was about recognizing that everything—learning, health, wellbeing, development—is connected. You can't nurture a child's mind while neglecting their body. You can't expect focus and achievement from students who spend all day in stale, cramped, artificially lit rooms.
When Bendix and Neufert moved those first classrooms into the Charlottenburg forest, they weren't just treating disease. They were teaching us something essential about childhood itself.
More than a century later, we're finally starting to listen.
