People usually assume a choir rehearsal is simply a place to practice songs for a concert, but at Harmony House Community Choir, rehearsal is only part of what we do!

Of course, we learn great music (from every style imaginable), and along the way we learn and develop style-specific vocal techniques and musicianship.

Every practice intentionally cultivates ear training, mind-body awareness, performance skills, and ensemble awareness through our playful learn-by-ear approach.

Most importantly, our aim is to equitably develop human capacity for all:

We learn to listen.
To support.
To lead.
To follow.
To take risks.
To celebrate someone else’s success as much as our own.

Sir Ken Robinson believed education should create the conditions for people to discover their true potential.

Stephen Covey reminded us that effectiveness begins with character, relationships, and learning to work interdependently.

Those ideas have shaped Harmony House Music Studio from the very beginning.

Since 1993:
FUN is our philosophy
EDUCATION is our mandate
EXPERIENCE is our method

Our choir is intentionally inclusive, non-auditioned, and multi-generational because we believe diversity strengthens a community.

Some people join because they want to improve their singing.

Some people come looking for connection and community.

Some are rebuilding confidence after years of believing they “can’t sing.”

All of those journeys belong here.

Because beneath the music is something so much bigger!

Belonging is the foundation.

Music is the vehicle.

Community is the practice.

Growth is the journey.

❤️ Different paths.
❤️ Different goals.
❤️ One community.

7 Habits. One Shared Journey.
People often assume that our Small Vocal Ensemble program (SVE), is about learning harmony.

It is… but that’s only the surface!

Beneath the music, students are learning how to function as an interdependent team.

Every singer has their own microphone. Every singer has opportunities to step forward as a soloist and opportunities to step back into the harmony—sometimes to support another singer, sometimes to experience the power of a unified group. Both roles matter.

The ensemble chooses the songs we study and helps create arrangements that reflect the personalities, goals, and strengths of the people in the room. Rather than asking, “Who’s the best person for this solo?” we ask, “What do you want to learn?” and “How can we create an arrangement that helps everyone grow?”

Without realizing it, students are practising Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People every week. They take initiative, think win-win, learn to listen deeply, solve problems creatively, and discover what it means to contribute to something larger than themselves.

Sir Ken Robinson believed education should cultivate human potential, not simply transfer information.

That philosophy has been at the heart of Harmony House since 1993.

Music is the vehicle.

Leadership is the practice.

Human development is the destination.

Our goal isn’t simply to develop stronger singers. It’s to help people develop the awareness, confidence, empathy, creativity, and capacity to lead themselves well, serve others generously, and work in harmony wherever life takes them.

That’s what has kept this program thriving for more than 30 years.
