Growing Together 🐸☀️

The Froggy Friends have been busy enjoying the summer sunshine and making the most of our time together!

Over the past few months, our classroom has welcomed some exciting changes. We have said goodbye to friends who are heading off to school and welcomed new friends who are joining Inspiring Minds, as well as friends moving up from the toddler room.

With these changes, the children have been developing new friendships and learning how to be part of a growing classroom community. We have been practicing sharing, taking turns, and using our social skills while playing together.

We have also noticed many thoughtful moments between friends. Children have been helping new friends feel comfortable by showing them around, inviting them to play, and offering hugs or comfort when they are feeling sad.

These everyday moments show us how the Froggy Friends are learning to care for one another, build relationships, and become confident members of their classroom community.

What are we learning?
Through these experiences, the children are developing their communication and social skills, empathy, cooperation, and sense of belonging. We are so proud to see our Froggy Friends growing together and showing kindness to their friends each day!

We have noticed that the toddler group loves exploring art. Inside the classroom we have many different art activities available to the children. Some days we have paint and brushes, cardboard tubes, scrub brushes or sponges to create with. Other days we have markers and crayons, stickers, scissors and stamps. We have also tried painting with pine cones, wood cookies and even with our feet.

As the summer weather has inspired us to bring more of our program outside, we have also taken the paint outside! We started with a large piece of cloth tied to the fence. The children used paint and water to create a wonderful piece of art. We tried painting with sand and laughed at the muddy creations we made.

Art fosters a child’s sense of creativity, curiosity and expression. Children learn to express their ideas about the world using various types of media. Of course, art also includes music, dramatic play, costumes and poetry. Through the various types of art we have available, the children are free to explore their imagination. Using paint brushes, crayons, markers, scissors and stickers helps to foster the development of a child's fine motor skills. Gross motor skills are fostered with larger movements such as during dancing to music. Making music outside, singing or drumming on a yoga ball or a bucket are excellent examples of this.

Through their bodies, words, and use of materials, children develop capacities for increasingly complex communication. Opportunities to explore materials support creativity, problem solving, and mathematical behaviours.” (How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years. 2014, p. 8)

The Eager Beaver's last visit to the park and splash pad was definitely a huge hit! We weren't sure if the weather would be warm enough, but after spending some time at the park, it quickly became clear that it was the perfect day to cool off in the water.

The children always enjoy heading out on walks and visiting local parks. They love exploring our community and visiting places they have already visited with their own families; this gives them a sense of comfort and familiarity.

At the park the children are given opportunities to build on their physical skills as they climb balance and swing. At the splash pad they enjoyed cooling off either right in the water or just at the edge. We took along some cups that the children filled and dumped.

We are so happy to introduce you to another volunteer in the Froggy Friends room on Mondays and Wednesdays mornings this summer.
