Orange Shirt Day 🧡

Today, we wear orange to honour Indigenous children and families and to remember the children who never returned home from residential schools. At daycare, we will used age-appropriate stories, activities, and conversations to help children learn about kindness, inclusion, belonging, and respect for everyone.

🌰 Today’s Learning: We explored a fun, hands-on pre-writing activity using chestnuts and chalk pathways. The children practiced fine-motor control, hand-eye coordination, concentration, and following different lines and patterns. They also explored early math concepts such as counting, quantity, and patterns while enjoying a sensory experience with natural materials. A simple activity like this helps build the foundation for future writing and mathematical skills!

The children had a blast using our nature items for scooping and pouring! They used the ramps to roll the acorns and conkers! Outside we used a rubber mallet to open some conkers up, and look inside of the "green balls" which I have just learned are black walnuts! They were using them as balls outside to go down our tubes. My oldest friend was stomping on them to see what was inside of it! No need to "buy" toys when children are happy exploring the great outdoors!!!!

When the children create an apple tree using toilet paper rolls, popsicle sticks, tongue depressors, and little apples, they develop a variety of important skills. This activity helps strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as children grasp and arrange the materials. It also encourages creativity, imagination, and problem-solving as they decide how to construct and decorate their tree. Children can practice early math skills by counting the apples and recognizing patterns, while also learning about nature and the different parts of an apple tree. The activity supports language development as children describe their creations and learn new vocabulary. Apple Pie Sensory Activity
The children participated in a pretend apple pie sensory activity, using play ingredients to explore the process of making an apple pie. They had opportunities to scoop, pour, stir, and count the different ingredients, encouraging hands-on exploration and engagement.

This activity supported the development of fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, early numeracy and counting skills, language development, sensory awareness, and following directions. It also encouraged imaginative play, curiosity, problem-solving, and independence as the children explored the materials and participated in the experience.
