ANNOUNCEMENT! The time has come to RETIRE from The Reading Room and “close-up” shop. My career at Brock as Manager of Graduate Operations more than fills my week and my brain! I am so grateful to work at an institution that has supported and accommodated me and my business interests since I began my career there in 2019.
I would have never imagined back in 2012 when I started The Reading Room, as a CDA, that it would become what it did. This little ‘word of mouth” reading program that I was offering was very much needed in Niagara!
In 2016, we were growing so much that I couldn’t do it alone! It was time to bring in Tiffany. Tiffany brought her expertise in Special Education and the teaching curriculum (especially the junior grades!) to the business. Word got out and Tiffany quickly became a fan favourite! Her students and families loved her!
In 2017, while I was in my 17th year of working for Niagara Catholic, they decided they would no longer be offering speech or literacy therapy to their students. Those students would need us more than ever to support their literacy.
In 2019, we expanded again and Sonia joined us! Sonia brought with her a true passion for literacy. This passion along with her expertise in primary education made her the perfect fit! Sonia quickly started with a growing caseload of adoring students until…..COVID HIT!!! The 3 of us did our very best to continue servicing children under these very difficult circumstances. We were so glad when it was “over” and we could continue delivering the Remediation Plus program as it was meant to be, in person! I would like to take this opportunity to thank two of my very dear friends, Sonia and Tiffany, for joining me in this adventure. I couldn’t have chosen two more perfect teachers to work alongside. I hope you continue to share your wealth of knowledge and advocate for The Science of Reading as you continue in your teaching careers at Niagara Catholic. They are so lucky to have you!
To all our little friends and their families who came to see us over the years, you all became so special to us. “You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights! You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights.” – Dr. Suess. You will always hold a very special place in my heart. ❤️

Lots of successes in The Reading Room these days! Students who started at the beginning of their school year are being reassessed. It’s my most favourite time of the year! The differences are incredible. 🏆

There is no reason for a child to have to struggle with reading and spelling. Remediation Plus is taught by highly respected private organizations and teachers who understand the importance of going beyond the traditional methods most often taught in our schools and making a difference with the Re....

We explicitly teach the 6 syllable types. Learning how to break words down to their smaller syllables is imperative for kids to take the next step in fluency and accurate spelling!

I am over the moon after receiving a new decodable book library! These are not your typically decodables. Rich with language, amazing pictures, and fun story lines. Good decodables are definitely hard to find. A wonderful addition to the Remediation Plus program and The Reading Room.

I feel like posting this alone may feed the myth that people with Dyslexia just see words and letter backwards. That can definitely be a sign but it is so much more than that and has nothing to do with vision.
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called a reading disability, dyslexia is a result of individual differences in areas of the brain that process language.
Luckily, they can be taught…just in a different way.

This is so powerful and makes me crazy! We were all “sold a story” on how to teach reading. It was wrong and ineffective and when it didn’t work, we blamed the children.
