Fall Tree Painting with Q Tips 🍂🎨
As we explore the changing season and the colours we are beginning to see outdoors, the children were invited to create their own fall trees using an alternative painting tool.
Each child was provided with a tree and a selection of fall inspired paint colours, including red, orange, and yellow. Instead of traditional paintbrushes, the children used Q tips to explore different ways of adding colour to their trees.
Some children carefully created small dots to represent individual leaves, while others experimented with lines, swirls, mixing colours, and larger areas of paint. There was no expectation for each tree to look the same. The children were able to make their own creative choices and explore the materials in ways that were meaningful to them.
Using the Q tips encouraged the children to practice their pincer grasp, hand control, and hand eye coordination as they dipped, dotted, dragged, and moved the small tool across their paper. As colours began to overlap, the experience also created opportunities to observe colour mixing and talk about the colours we see in nature during the fall.
This simple invitation brought together seasonal learning, creativity, fine motor development, and sensory exploration while allowing each child’s artwork to remain uniquely their own.
Learning through play means that even something as simple as changing the tool we paint with can create a whole new opportunity to explore, experiment, and discover.
