š Walking Rainbow Experiment: Exploring Colour, Science and Inquiry Through Play
The children were invited to participate in a group science experiment to explore how colours can move and mix. Using cups filled with water and primary coloured dye, we created a āwalking rainbowā by connecting each cup with paper towel bridges.
We began by filling select cups with red, yellow, and blue coloured water, leaving the cups in between empty. The paper towels were placed so that each end connected one cup to the next, allowing the children to observe what would happen over time.
Before the experiment began, the children were encouraged to share their ideas and make predictions about what might happen to the empty cups. This supported early scientific thinking as they formed hypotheses and expressed their thoughts and reasoning.
As time passed, the children observed the coloured water slowly traveling along the paper towels and into the empty cups. When the colours met, they began to mix, creating new secondary colours. The once empty cups gradually filled, bringing the rainbow to life.
Through this experience, children were exploring cause and effect, colour theory, and early science concepts in a hands on and meaningful way. They practiced observation, patience, and inquiry as they watched the changes happen over time.
This activity highlights how simple materials can create powerful learning opportunities, allowing children to question, predict, and discover through play based exploration.

š Cotton Ball Rainbows: Colour Exploration and Fine Motor Development
The children were invited to explore colour and creativity using cotton ball rainbows, coloured water, and droppers. Each child was provided with cups of coloured water and encouraged to transfer the liquid onto their cotton ball rainbows using droppers.
As the children engaged with the materials, they explored how the cotton balls absorbed the coloured water, watching as the colours spread and blended. This created a meaningful opportunity to observe cause and effect while experimenting with colour mixing in a hands on way.
Using the droppers supported the development of fine motor skills as children practiced squeezing, releasing, and controlling the amount of water they transferred. This strengthens hand muscles and coordination, which are important for early writing and self help skills.
Throughout the experience, the children made independent choices about which colours to use and how to apply them, allowing for creative expression and exploration. Some children layered colours, while others focused on filling specific areas of their rainbow.
This activity combined sensory exploration, early science concepts, and creativity, allowing children to investigate how materials interact while engaging in open ended, play based learning.

Colour Matching Collage: Collaborative Art and Early Classification
At the tuff tray, we created an inviting, colour rich art experience by taping down a variety of coloured papers and placing matching loose parts in the centre. The children were invited to explore the materials and match the loose parts to the corresponding coloured paper, using glue to secure their choices.
As the children engaged in this experience, they practiced early classification skills by identifying and matching colours. This supported their developing understanding of sorting, categorizing, and making connections between materials.
The variety of loose parts, including feathers, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, and paper pieces, provided opportunities for sensory exploration while also strengthening fine motor skills. Children used their hands to pick up, place, and press materials down, building coordination and control.
This experience also encouraged collaboration, as children worked alongside one another, shared materials, and observed each otherās ideas. The process of creating together supported social learning and a sense of belonging within the group.
Once completed, the group artwork was displayed in the classroom, allowing the children to revisit their work, take pride in their contributions, and see how their individual efforts came together as a collective piece.
This open ended art experience supported creativity, early math concepts, and social connection, demonstrating how learning naturally emerges through play.

Colour Mixing Exploration: Discovering Secondary Colours Through Play
We created a collaborative group experience to explore how colours can be transformed. A large piece of paper was taped to the table, where red, yellow, and blue paint were thoughtfully placed with space beside them to invite prediction and discovery.
The children worked together to mix two primary colours, observing the changes as new colours began to appear. Through this hands on experience, they discovered how secondary colours are created, building an understanding of cause and effect while engaging in meaningful experimentation.
This shared activity encouraged communication and collaboration, as children observed each otherās work, shared ideas, and revisited different colour combinations. The visual layout of the activity provided a reference point, supporting memory and deeper understanding as children connected their discoveries to future experiences and everyday conversations about colour.
Following this more guided exploration, the children were invited to continue their learning through open ended painting on a new large sheet of paper. Here, they freely mixed colours, explored movement, and expressed their creativity, transforming their understanding into abstract artwork.
Both pieces were displayed in the classroom, allowing the children to revisit their learning, reflect on their discoveries, and take pride in their collaborative work. This experience highlights how structured invitations and open ended exploration can work together to deepen understanding while keeping learning rooted in play.

Dinosaur Footprint Painting: Creative Expression and Inquiry Through Play
The children were invited to explore painting using dinosaur figures as their tools. By dipping the dinosaurs into paint and pressing them onto paper, they created a variety of unique footprints and marks.
The children chose their own paint colours, and some decided to experiment by mixing colours together to discover what new shades they could create. This process supported curiosity, creativity, and early scientific thinking as they observed how colours changed when combined.
To extend the experience, I placed a photo on the table showing different dinosaur footprints. This visual prompt encouraged children to observe closely and compare the prints they were making to those in the image. Some children attempted to match their painted footprints to the reference photo, strengthening their observation skills and visual discrimination.
Through this invitation, children were developing fine motor control as they grasped and pressed the dinosaurs, exploring cause and effect as they experimented with pressure and paint coverage, and engaging in early literacy and science skills through matching and comparing.
This experience blended sensory exploration, creativity, and inquiry, allowing the children to investigate dinosaurs in a hands on and meaningful way.

š Fire Rescue Mission: Dramatic Play and Making Sense of the World
This week, the children have been exploring community worker roles, with a strong focus on firefighters. Building on this interest, I transformed our dollhouse into a āburning buildingā by placing cut out flames around the structure and invited the children to go on a fire rescue mission.
Equipped with firefighter hats, trucks, and small figures, the children took turns becoming firefighters, working together to put out the fires around the house.
What may look like simple pretend play is actually rich, meaningful learning. Through this experience, the children were engaging in dramatic play by stepping into real world community roles. They were building an understanding of community helpers and how they keep people safe. They practiced turn taking, cooperation, and role negotiation while strengthening fine motor skills as they carefully placed and removed the small flame cutouts. They also developed problem solving skills as they decided where the fires were and how to respond.
After each turn, the children switched roles and collectively decided where to place the flames next, thoughtfully repositioning them around the dollhouse. This collaborative planning extended the play and deepened their engagement.
Through this type of inquiry based dramatic play, children are making sense of the world around them. They are processing what they see in their community, building empathy, and learning how people work together to solve problems.
Our curriculum follows the childrenās interest and extend their learning through intentional, play based experiences that support social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.

š¼ āFeed the Babiesā ā Sensory & Fine Motor Learning Invitation
Our current interest in babies and families inspired todayās hands-on learning activity. Using recycled boxes, we created baby faces with open mouths, inviting the children to āfeed the babies.ā
On the tuff tray, the children were provided bowls of dry noodles, rice, spoons, and fine motor tweezers. From there, the learning naturally unfolded through play.
What the children explored:
⢠Scooping, pinching, pouring, and dumping ā all of which help strengthen fine motor muscles needed for self-help skills and early writing readiness
⢠Hand-eye coordination as they aimed food into the babiesā mouths
⢠Sensory exploration through the different textures of rice and noodles
⢠Counting and sorting as some children organized materials or counted pieces as they fed their baby
⢠Imaginative play as they nurtured and cared for their ābabies,ā connecting directly to their current interest in families
This simple recycled-materials setup created a rich opportunity for exploration, independence, and early math concepts while supporting childrenās natural curiosity and play themes.

š Train Track Painting šØ
Today the children were invited to paint using trains instead of paintbrushes. Each child selected the colours they wanted to use and explored how the train wheels moved through the paint to create unique track marks on their paper.
This activity encouraged creativity and experimentation while supporting fine motor development and hand-eye coordination. The children observed how the wheels made different patterns and discovered new colours as the paints mixed together.
Exploring familiar materials in new ways invites curiosity, problem solving, and open-ended learning experiences that make the process both fun and meaningful. š

š Loose Parts Invitation: āCan You Make a Train Track?ā
Today we placed a variety of wooden blocks and toy trains on our tuff tray, paired with a simple question: āCan you make a train track?ā
What began as a small invitation quickly became a meaningful open-ended play experience. These types of activities hold no boundaries, as there is no right or wrong way to play, which allows children to explore freely, think creatively, and collaborate naturally.
As the children began exploring, the learning unfolded in many directions. Some children built tunnels for their trains and experimented with ramps, discovering how to make their trains move up and down. Others extended their play by adding a cardboard ramp that connected the table to the floor, enhancing their understanding of height, gravity, and cause and effect.
A few friends chose to create houses and garages for small cars, incorporating imaginative storytelling into their play, while others focused on balancing and stacking, constructing tall towers that tested their patience, persistence, and problem-solving.
Although this setup began with an idea connected to our current interest in trains, the true value of the experience came from the childrenās self-guided exploration. As the educator, I stepped back to observe, offering support only when needed, allowing their curiosity to drive the learning.
