As this week is World Breastfeeding Week, I believe it's equally important to provide a diverse language that is, or should be adopted as "breastfeeding" practice, or encompassed within the "breastfeeding" umbrella.

Exclusive pumpers have been insistent for many years that exclusive pumping is breastfeeding. However, as I found myself going to download the logo shared on lactation profiles everywhere, I read the fine print. It indicated it shouldn't be used on a number of photos/projects including bottles.

As exclusive pumpers, we use bottles (for the most part)! There are some that will say, but they mean bottles for the use of breastmilk/human milk substitutes.

As an individual with a Doctorate in Human Sexuality, I know how important the use of specific terms can be. I wanted to ensure as many people who in some shape or form are providing/using/donating human milk are recognized. If your method of feeding human milk isn't mentioned here, please feel free to PM so that I can ensure you too feel included.

Can you believe it? Finally, exclusive pumping education for lactation professionals. The Exclusive Pumping Institute will be launching a few LIVE 10 to 15 minute segments to give you an idea of what is happening in the exclusive pumping realm. The first LIVE segment is this week, Wednesday, June 9th at 7:00PM EDT. I will be talking Exclusive Pumping Growth. This will give you an idea of how important it is to get to know more about exclusive pumping, and what it may mean for you as you continue to provide lactation care for years to come.

Exclusive Pumping Advocacy is a big part of what the Exclusive Pumping Institute strives to accomplish. Exclusive pumpers definitely have a sense of what is going on, but many lactation professionals don't realize the disconnect with their exclusive pumping clients, or even that it is a problem. Thankfully, Dr. Laura Brayton, DC has given me the opportunity to provide a general sense of what is happening in the realm of exclusive pumping, and how this practice continues to grow as a valid method of feeding infants.

Dr. Ashton Fortin Higgins, Ph.D. is the Founder and Educator at the Exclusive Pumping Institute. The Institute focuses on the education, training and education of exclusively pumping breast milk. Dr. Ashton obtained her Ph.D. and M.Ed. in Human Sexuality Studies from Widener University where her research focused on HIV education. Dr. Ashton received her 90+ breastfeeding education hours from Mohawk College. She specifically consults with exclusive pumping individuals to establish proper breast fl**ge sizing, appropriate scheduling and other concerns relating solely to exclusive pumping. Dr. Ashton also provides education and training to lactation health professionals to better understand exclusive pumping, as it differs from at breast consultations. She is passionate about exclusive pumping advocacy, and seeks a level of acceptance for exclusive pumpers in that exclusive pumping is a valid feeding choice for infants in addition to nursing, supplementing, and formula.
