Tool Spotlight: Visual Timers ⏰
A visual timer helps children see the passage of time, making transitions more predictable and reducing frustration.
Try saying one for:
✔️ Screen time
✔️ Homework
✔️ Cleaning up
✔️ Bedtime routines
✔️ Waiting for preferred items or activities
Pair the timer with a simple reminder such as: “5 more minutes with iPad, then it’s time for dinner.”
Small changes in how we present expectations can make a big difference.

What’s one everyday skill your child is working on right now?
Getting dressed? Packing a backpack? Cleaning up after meals?
Independence doesn’t happen overnight—it develops through practice, support, and lots of small successes along the way.
Swipe through to learn some common reasons a child may still need help, even when they seem capable of the skill. 💙

Think about learning a new skill yourself. If it was difficult and nobody acknowledged your effort, would you want to keep practicing?
When teaching everyday skills like dressing, brushing teeth, preparing snacks, or cleaning up, reinforcement can help make practice more worthwhile.
Reinforcement doesn’t have to be elaborate. It might be:
⭐ Specific praise
⭐ A preferred activity afterward
⭐ Extra free time
⭐ A favourite song
⭐ Earning toward a larger reward
When a skill is new, recognize effort and progress—not just perfect performance.

One of the greatest myths about Coffee Club is...that we drink lots of coffee! ☕️ There aren't a lot of coffee drinkers in our group, but we do love snacks and pot lucks.
Coffee Club gives youth and adults (16+) with exceptional needs a place to connect with friends and feel at home. This drop-in social group is open to people with disabilities who are age 16 and older. Coffee Club meets in person two Mondays each month from 7 to 9 pm. Coffee Club also meets virtually every Thursday from 3 to 4 pm.
In-person gatherings often involve different activities like going to the movies, visiting a restaurant, seasonal activities, and so much more. To learn about upcoming opportunities, visit www.wrfn.info/events/.
Coffee Club is facilitated by Carmen Sutherland. For more information on our Coffee Club or to get the weekly Zoom link, please call Carmen Sutherland at 519-500-7153, or email her at [email protected].

When teaching a new skill, it’s easy to focus on the end goal—but independence is built through many small successes along the way.
If your child is learning to make a snack, getting ingredients from the fridge, opening a container, or putting items away afterward are all important steps worth celebrating.
Recognizing effort and progress can help build confidence, motivation, and independence over time. 💙
