OUR PHILOSOPHY:
At Emmanuel at Brighton, we strive to enhance a child's natural sense of curiosity. Learning is most meaningful when it happens in the context of the child's everyday life experiences - at home with their family, and at our centre. Through hands-on explorations and discovery, children use their senses to learn about the world around them. Our emergent curriculum is play-based and child-focused, empowering each child to reach their potential in cognitive, physical, emotional and social development. We work closely with parents, respecting and recognizing diverse values, beliefs, customs and traditions of each family we serve. OUR PROGRAMS:
Our environments are set up to include a rich variety of developmentally appropriate, accessible materials that encourage and promote learning through play, exploration and discovery. Children are supported through their experiences by Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECE). Along with observations and evaluations, our educators partner with the children, families and community to enhance curriculum to promote optimal growth and development for each child. An important component of every program is creating an atmosphere of mutual respect for oneself, each other, and the world around us. 'Tools for Life', a relationship building program, is an integral part of our curriculum and provides children with the tools to problem solve and develop positive relationships in their lives. Each program also offers children the opportunity to explore their natural world. Children who experience nature are better able to problem solve, are healthier, have less stress, are better able to focus and are more creative. Our natural playgrounds let children plant and harvest, watch the plants grow, observe insects, role play, build forts and discover dirt, mud and water. These experiences enhance a child's curiosity and allow each child to use all five senses. Our natural areas become outdoor classrooms that give each child and educator diverse experiences as the season's change. Children who experience nature will go on to develop a life-long respect for nature.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On September 30th. we honor the experiences of Indigenous children taken to residential schools and reflect on the lasting impact these institutions had on survivors, families, and communities. We are very intentional in working towards Truth and Reconciliation each and every day, by learning with First Nations, Metis and Inuit mentors.

We continue to learn with and share Phyllis Webstad’s children’s book “Orange Shirt”; which is a true story of the author’s experiences of the residential school system. When Phyllis was a little girl, she was excited to go to residential school for the first time. Her Granny bought her a bright orange shirt that she loved, and she wore it to school for her first day. When she arrived at school her bright orange shirt was taken away. This true story also inspired the movement behind Orange Shirt Day.

We wear orange to signify our commitment to learning about the Land, identity, truth, reciprocity, kindness, love, and meaningful action. Thank you to all the families who joined us today on our Truth and Reconciliation Walk.

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day, an important celebration of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Cultures, the amazing contributions of Indigenous Nations to the Global Community, and the wonderful diversity of Indigenous Nations across Turtle Island and Canada.

We Celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day today, Friday, June 19 with our community and our Metis Legacy Learning mentor Angie Lee Coture.

We have been wearing orange shirts today; the orange shirt symbolizes solidarity with Indigenous communities and honours the legacy of residential school survivors. The orange shirt symbolizes our commitment to listen, learn and take meaningful actions each day towards a better tomorrow.

We raised the flag of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy celebrating their long history of Peace and Unity. We celebrate the rich history and present mentorship of Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Chonnonton Nations each day. We walk in Peace on Turtle Island aspiring to the rich history of living in harmony with the Land and Mother Nature.

It was a wonderful day at Woodside National Historic Site, Parks Canada filled with sunshine and a cool breeze that filled the air with the fragrant scent of lilac. We worked in our garden pulling the weeds and planted our Three Sister’s Garden. This type of garden is an Indigenous companion planting method that grows corn, beans and squash. The corn supports the beans, the beans bring nitrogen to the soil, and the squash acts as a mulch with its big leaves keeping the weeds down. The Three Sister’s Garden teaches us that if we work together, focusing on our strengths, we can accomplish great things. We also enjoyed an early spring harvest from the garden as we stewed some rhubarb on the fire. In order for our garden to provide us with more gifts, we provided the garden with water in order for it to grow. We look forward to caring for our garden and observing the changes that will happen each week over the summer. Thank-you Angie for continuing to share your culture with us.
