✅ Plan for a smooth trip to the Brantford campus this fall. Beginning Oct. 5, construction on the City of Brantford's Downtown Revitalization Project moves closer to the campus district. For up to three months, the following traffic conditions will be in place:

• Brant Avenue between Dalhousie and Colborne Streets: Reduced to one lane in each direction
• Dalhousie Street between Bridge Street and Brant Avenue: Reduced to one lane
• Colborne Street: Closed at Brant Avenue

Building Business Resilience in Brantford: Wilfrid Laurier University was proud to sponsor the City of Brantford’s inaugural Industrial Expo on Sept. 23, fostering connections between 210+ local companies and more than 400 attendees.

Lazaridis School of Business & Economics Dean Kyle Murray and Professor Michael Haughton offered research-informed insights on tackling ongoing labour attraction and retention challenges, and advice for businesses at the intersection of global forces and local resources.

User Experience Design Assistant Professor John Muñoz immersed visitors in digital spaces using a VR headset to demonstrate how technology can be used for business and training applications, while Laurier’s student ambassadors answered questions on how the community can engage with the campus – from attending free cultural events to accessing event space – to contribute to a more vibrant Brantford.

Congratulations to the City of Brantford Economic Development team for connecting the local business community at this crucially important time to promote learning, collaboration and innovation to build a stronger, more resilient local economy.

Planting Seeds of Sovereignty: Laurier researchers help incubate community garden in Kakisa, Northwest Territories ⬇️

Access to fresh, affordable food is a pervasive challenge in Kakisa, considered the Northwest Territories’ “tiniest town.” Two hours north of the Alberta border, Kakisa is a Dene community of fewer than 40 people set along the edge of Kakisa Lake.

Living off the land is the foundation of the community’s food system but has become increasingly difficult as the effects of climate change rapidly alter ecosystems.

Northern Canada is warming approximately three times faster than the global average. Wildfires and low water levels are making hunting and fishing more challenging, and the nearest grocery store is 90 minutes away, so growing food locally is beneficial.

Together with Laurier faculty member Andrew Spring, the Canada Research Chair in Northern Sustainable Food Systems, the Kakisa community developed a climate action plan, which includes growing food, setting up recycling and composting programs, and engaging local youth.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities – and we recognize and reflect on the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools in Canada.

We encourage the university community to engage in learning activities and reflection, and to give support and care to our Indigenous community members.

Laurier will fly The Survivor’s Flag on all campuses. It will be lowered to half-mast on Sept. 30 to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
