Supporting Our Community at the Cambridge Neighbourhood Table!

Last week, representatives from Conestoga College’s Talent Hub Career Services & Career Centre — Melissa McNown-Smith and Markeil Barnaby —had the privilege of attending an event facilitated by the Kinbridge Community Association.

Through Conestoga's Food Security Collective, we actively support Kinbridge's Cambridge Neighbourhood Table initiative, helping to prepare and serve meals for local community members. During these meaningful dinners, we’ve engaged in insightful conversations about the needs of the community.

Key takeaways included:
➡️ Employment Opportunities: Exploring ways to support Conestoga students and community members who attend these dinners with employment supports and opportunities.

➡️ Career & Academic Pathways: Offering guidance and resources to non-Conestoga attendees to help them discover new opportunities and leverage the college as a resource.

It was incredible to connect with community members, listen to their aspirations, and discuss actionable steps to address their goals. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and creating positive impacts for our community.

The manufacturing industry in Waterloo Region continues to thrive, offering exciting opportunities for job seekers and newcomers alike. Recently, Conestoga College's Community Career Centre had the pleasure of hosting and learning from Kelly Boyi, P.Eng., PMP, CSM, who shared his inspiring journey in manufacturing at our Waterloo site, offering practical advice on:

✅ Standing out in a competitive labour market.
✅ Getting started in the dynamic world of manufacturing.
✅ Developing the skills and resilience needed to succeed.

Facilitating the discussion were Jennie DiGirolamo and Olusola Oladele from the Workplace & Immigrant Network developed by the Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin. Their impactful work connects skilled individuals with meaningful opportunities in manufacturing, breaking barriers and building stronger workforce connections.

Key Highlights:
🔧 Waterloo Region’s manufacturing sector is a powerhouse, with opportunities in advanced manufacturing, automation, and green practices for over 150 years.
🌍 Programs like ours and the Workplace Immigration Network empower newcomers, helping them navigate and excel in the labour market.
🤝 Sharing experiences and creating networks are crucial for career success in this thriving industry, just like any other.

This collaboration between experienced professionals, industry leaders, and community initiatives highlights the incredible potential within manufacturing and how accessible these opportunities are for everyone.
