A frightening medical emergency inspired a new entrepreneur who is now changing the health and lives of thousands of people.

Folake Owodunni (MBET’ 21) was compelled to create Emergency Response Africa to address the gaps in health services available to people living in Africa. The health-tech company is transforming the way medical emergencies are managed in Africa, beginning in Nigeria, by connecting communities to a large network of first responders, emergency vehicles and hospitals in minutes.

The Sankofa Pathways to University (SPU) program

This Spring 2023, the University of Waterloo will launch the Sankofa Pathways to University (SPU) program. From late-June to early-August, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a blended class (combination of in-class and online), full-campus experience, including:
> Orientation
> Registration as a UWaterloo student > A campus tour
> Access to on-campus study supports > Lectures
> SPU Graduation
INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE?
Situated within the Arts First Program, this summer’s course offering is “Taking B[l]ack History” taught by Dr. Christopher Taylor, Assistant Professor and Associate Vice-President, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism. The course will take place Monday to Friday over a seven-week period. Upon completion

The African Community Wellness Initiative in partnership with the Social Development Center are offering $50 Walmart Gift-cards for African, Caribbean and Black identifying UW students who face financial barriers.
