WHAM will be open on October 17 & 18 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM for all you Pumpkinfest revelers. As part of the town-wide festivities, special exhibitions, kids’ crafts and world-famous pumpkin pie will be offered at the museum throughout the weekend.

The Moonlight & Mayhem walking tours of old Waterford will also be featured on Saturday and Sunday with one show running from 6pm to 7pm each evening. Tickets available on Eventbrite - https://shorturl.at/JnKQk

With summer is almost over, that means Christmas is just around the corner! (sort of)

WHAM is accepting vendors of artisan or handmade items to join us for Holiday Night Market at the Museum on Thursday, December 10! Running from 4-8 PM, vendors can sell their crafted gifts and wares for the holiday season.

Norfolk celebrates heritage and culture through Dogwood Awards

Norfolk County is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Dogwood Awards, which recognize individuals and groups who make outstanding contributions to preserving, promoting, and celebrating Norfolk County's heritage and culture.
Established in 2007 and named after Norfolk County's official flower, the Dogwood Awards recognize individuals and groups who make outstanding contributions to heritage and culture in the community.

Awards are presented in four categories:
-Individual Award
-Group Award
-Lifetime Achievement Award
-Youth Award (for individuals under 18)

Residents are encouraged to nominate individuals or groups whose efforts have helped preserve, promote, and celebrate heritage and culture in Norfolk County.
Nominations are due September 30, 2026.

Nomination forms are available online at norfolkheritage.ca/awards and at the Delhi To***co Museum & Heritage Centre, Norfolk County Archives, Port Dover Harbour Museum, and Waterford Heritage & Agricultural Museum.

The 2026 Dogwood Awards ceremony will take place in June 2027 – with additional details being announced at a later date. See less

Did you know that you can use the Norfolk County Community Map to see various aerial maps of the county from different years? Staff here at WHAM have frequently use these maps for research, whether it’s to find a demolished building, locating an old cemetery or seeing how towns and villages have changed over the years.

For instance, compare these aerial shots around the former pickle factory a.k.a. WHAM! Taken in 2025, 1964 and 1945 respectively, these photographs show just how the area has change over the past 81 years, including the factory/museum itself (on the far left of each photo). You can even see the lines of pickling barrels beside the factory in the 1964 photo.

We found another great view of the area from our original post a few days ago, this time a colourized comparison between the years 1890 and 1968. As some have pointed out in our previous post, these photos were both taken from the famous ballroom of the Bowlby Mansion (the great stone house on the corner of Main St N and Sovereign St E).

The 1968 photo depicts the new bridge that runs past through onto Old Hwy 24/Main Street whereas the 1890 photo shows the bridge running through to West Street, now called Auty Street. Remains of the original road leading up to the bridge can still be seen from the intersection at Mechanic Street and Old Hwy 24 just before the bridge heading south. This road is now named “Old Main St.”

Though we can safely assume most people wouldn’t remember the buildings from the 1890 photograph (if you do, you might want to contact the Guiness Book of World Records), we’re sure some of our followers remember some of the buildings depicted in the 1968 photo of the area.

Today is World Horse Day and what better way to commemorate with this fantastic photo from the collection!
