Improving your child's READING skills!

12/25/2025

As the year is drawing to a close, I would like to thank everyone who has made and continues to make Open Book a wonderful success. This in turn allows me to keep doing what I love best, which is to teach young children.

I am eternally grateful to all of you, including those who very generously recommend my programs to friends and share my FB posts on the local groups. It takes a village as they say and people from all over Waterdown, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville and Carlisle have truly supported Open Book in every way, right from the very beginning.

For my current clients, it is a pleasure working with all of you and I cannot wait to achieve even more milestones together in the coming year. Your loyalty and support means the world to me and I thank you wholeheartedly for choosing Open Book and entrusting us to teach your precious cargo.

Wishing everyone a joyful holiday season and a happy and healthy 2026!

Cheers,

Angela 🌲❤️💚

Hi everyone!

We are just kicking off our Open House on this glorious Saturday and hoping to see a few of your lovely faces! If you are out and about in the village, please do stop by and say “hello”. You might even get lucky enough to score yourself a coffee or a tea and a Northern Irish nibble or two! I mean, I can’t eat them all! Or, on second thoughts? ☘️

Cheers and have a wonderful day!

Angela ❤️

Happy Tuesday to all! ❤️

As I have been getting the school all ready for Christmas the last day or two, (because ‘tis the season, after all) I am feeling a little nostalgic about the number of years that I have been teaching and I am thinking to myself how very fortunate I am to have been able to follow my professional dream for over three decades. Teaching was not my first career, but it was certainly my last and most rewarding one.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my many many amazing Open Book clients, (past and present) for all of the incredible support that you have given the Tutoring Centre over the years and continue to do so. I cannot tell you how very appreciative that I am and how blessed I feel to be able to continue to do what I absolutely love, which is to teach your precious children. Thank you again from the very bottom of my heart. ❤️

Cheers,

Angela ❤️

Happy Monday evening to all!

At Open Book, we offer a phonics-based reading approach that gives our students the tools that they need to break down the language and de-code words.

So many young children are struggling with the “whole” language approach to reading, (which is comprised of “sight” word memorization) without having a solid phonetic and phonemic awareness foundation solidly in place. This is the reason why a certain percentage of students are not performing well in the Early Reading Screening testing that is now given to children in SK-Grade 2. This can easily cause notable reading frustration, which sadly can lead to self-doubt and a lack of interest in reading and language work, generally.

Our students thoroughly enjoy the small group lessons. However, each student receives one-on-one instruction within the group, whilst having the benefit of all of the peripheral learning that takes place in each and every class, (as the children are all working at different levels).

The classes are upbeat, engaging and lots of fun! This is key to early learning and one of the reasons why students find wonderful success at Open Book. 📖

For anyone who is interested in getting some information on our reading program, please do not hesitate to call or text me at (416) 587-7558. I would be only too delighted to have a chat about the Open Book reading program and discuss how it can greatly benefit your child. I can also be reached via FB and email.

Cheers and Go Jays! ⚾️

Good afternoon everyone,

Just to let you know that I will be offering a block of math classes in the near future for children in SK-Grade 2. We have been focusing on the older students of recent and I would now like to offer some classes for the younger children.

The classes will be hands-on using my Montessori materials that I have worked with for many years. They are wonderful for teaching mathematical foundational skills, which appear to be very lacking these days. The sensorial foundation that the Montessori materials provide help to develop focusing skills, fine motor skills and a sense of order and sequence. This sets the stage for a positive relationship with math, as the students learn the decimal system, the basic mathematical concepts and so much more, using these amazing and very creative materials.

If you are interested in further information, please do not hesitate to call or text me at (416) 587-7558. I would be delighted to chat with you.

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Angela ❤️

We are all ready for the Scarecrow Walk! I hope that my spooky teaching assistant stays put this year at the school and doesn’t run around scaring half the town at night, as she has done other years! She’s a wild woman!

Don’t forget to stop by on October 26th, as we will be giving out treats for the Waterdown Treat Walk. See you there! 🎃👻☠️ 🧡

Good evening everyone!

Just to let you know that there will be a FUNdraiser for McMaster’s Children Hospital outside the Tutoring Centre, (299 Dundas Street East in Waterdown) this coming Saturday, from 11:00am-2:00pm.

The young lady who is organizing this wonderful event is Mori Freitag. Mori is nine years old. This incredible little girl has set a fundraising goal of $10,000 in honour of her upcoming tenth birthday. Mori has raised $5500.00 to date, which is absolutely astounding and very indicative of the incredible support from this wonderful community!

Please try and drop by on Saturday to help Mori reach her goal. There will be lots of fun stuff on display, as in keychains and bracelets that Mori has made, the infamous Freitag water balloons, (that kids go nuts for), as well as freezies and lemonade. You definitely don’t want to miss out on all the fun and I hope to see many of you there! Woot woot!

For those of you who are able to pop by, I would like to thank you so much in advance for your support of MacKids like Mori! 100% of all proceeds will go directly to the highest priority needs at the Children’s Hospital.

Cheers and have a wonderful night!

Angela ❤️
