Outside is a wonderful place to practice risky play. While it can sometimes be hard to “say yes” to risk, we know how valuable these experiences are for our classrooms.

Through risky play, children develop:
• Confidence & self-esteem
• Healthy boundaries & risk-management skills
• Resilience
• Gross & fine motor skills
• Physical literacy
• A sense of fun & adventure
• An understanding of their own limits
• Identity & independence
It builds trust in their own bodies and abilities. As they navigate challenges, they become more confident taking on bigger challenges as they grow.

Our role is not to eliminate every risk, but to create an environment where children can explore, test their abilities, and learn to manage risk with support.

We ask questions that help them think about their bodies and abilities: “Do you feel sturdy?” “How can you balance your body?” “Do you have a strong grip?” “Where could you put your feet?” “Do you feel ready?” We remind them, “We are close by.”

This gives them space to try things independently while knowing a trusted adult is nearby if they need support.

In our outdoor classroom, we love seeing the many ways they explore our small slide. They might go backwards, upside down, sideways, jump, or find another creative way to move their bodies. We encourage them to look around and consider others: “Is anyone below you?” “Where is your friend?” “How can you make sure everyone is safe?”
We also establish clear boundaries: “Please wait until your friend is finished before you climb up the slide.”

Risky play does not mean ignoring safety. It means offering manageable risks within a safe, supportive environment.

*Always assess hazards before and during play and maintain appropriate supervision. Risky play is NOT ignoring safety rules/laws, pushing children beyond their safe or developmental zone, or leaving them unsupervised in hazardous conditions.

When we give children opportunities to climb, balance, move, experiment, and test their limits, with thoughtful boundaries and supportive adults nearby, we help them develop the skills and confidence they need to navigate the world around them.

September 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
We honour and remember the children who never made it home.

Today, we reflect on our roles as educators and our responsibility to reconciliation.

This week, we wear orange, and orange can be worn any week. The colour orange reminds us of our responsibility to children, our responsibility to one another, and our responsibility to reconciliation.

Everyone deserves kindness, respect, a safe space, to be seen, and a sense of belonging.

We learn from different stories, cultures, perspectives, and ways of knowing. We believe that learning these values early helps children grow into caring, respectful, and compassionate citizens.

Reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility that requires action. As early learning educators, we commit to the following:

Learning and Teaching: We will integrate age-appropriate Indigenous perspectives, stories, and teachings into our programs.

Listening and Respecting: We will seek out and honour Indigenous voices, knowledge keepers, and community resources.

Building Relationships: We will foster respectful relationships grounded in kindness, inclusion, and mutual understanding.

Taking Responsibility: We will continue to learn about the history and impacts of colonization and reflect on how we can do better.

Caring for the Land: We will teach children to respect and care for the land as an essential part of reconciliation.

Today is a time to reflect, listen, learn, and commit to this action, not only today, but throughout the year.

Expectation vs. Reality

It’s September 29.
We have been in preschool for less than three weeks.

When we plan for the start of a new year, we are constantly balancing "too many" materials with "too few".

Yes, clean-up can be challenging when there are too many materials available. But when there are too few, conflict can arise before children have the language, experience, and connection they need to navigate it.

We don’t lower our expectations.
We change them.

We consider the ages in each class, their experience in the program, their individual needs, and the story they each bring with them.

And, perhaps most importantly, "we clean up together".
It is our role as members of the classroom community to support this work. Why?
Because no one wants to do the job alone.

And because children learn through modelling.

The same is true for conflict. Children learn how to navigate conflict because we model what that can look and sound like. We offer the language. We stay close. We support them through the hard moments.

In all of this, we are supporting so much more than “clean-up.”

We are supporting language, problem-solving, fine motor skills, independence, connection, cooperation, responsibility, and belonging.

Now, what if I told you that it’s September 29, and the first picture is what happened after a four-year-old class cleaned up together?

They took extra care decorating the fridge.
They put the tools where they thought they belonged.
And then they started another load of laundry.

That is the learning.
That is the progress.

And sometimes, shutting the door on the mess is the best choice we can make in that moment so we can prioritize connection.

Because we know we’ll get there.

The classroom will become more organized. The routines will become more familiar. The expectations will grow with them.

But it takes time.
And that’s okay.

We’re only three weeks in.
