BK & AK Students Celebrate Sturgeon Release at Highbanks

On June 18, students and staff from Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig (BK) and Anishinaabeg Kinomaagewgamig (AK) gathered at Highbanks for a special Sturgeon Release Ceremony, celebrating a year of learning, stewardship, and connection to the land and water.

The day began with a meaningful ceremony in the Highbanks Lodge, where students learned about the cultural and ecological importance of "Name" (Lake Sturgeon) to Anishinaabe people and to the health of our waterways.

Following the ceremony, students walked to the water's edge where four young sturgeon, raised through our school hatchery program, were released into their natural habitat. Excitement filled the shoreline as students watched the fish begin their journey in the St. Clair River system. For many students, this was a memorable opportunity to see firsthand how their learning can contribute to conservation and environmental stewardship.

The release marked an important milestone in BK and AK's growing fish hatchery initiative. Throughout the year, students learned about fish biology, water quality, habitat protection, and traditional Anishinaabe teachings related to caring for the land and waters. The sturgeon release brought together science, culture, language, and land-based learning in a powerful and meaningful way.

The celebration concluded with a community feast, providing an opportunity for students, staff, and guests to come together in gratitude and reflection.

Miigwech to everyone who helped make this day possible, including our Elders, Knowledge Keepers, staff, community partners, and students. While only four sturgeon were released this year, this is just the beginning. The future of our hatchery program is bright, and we look forward to expanding opportunities for students to learn as stewards of the land and water for generations to come.
