Today, up at Bkejwanong, Where the Waters Divide, our community gathered for the Giigoonyig Mnidookeng, Fish Release Ceremony. The turnout was incredible, youth, adults, and Elders came together in a spirit of learning, gratitude, and renewal.

This marks the beginning of an annual tradition. The first four sturgeon were released today, symbolizing reciprocity, acknowledging how our fish relatives have always been here for us, and now it is our turn to give back to them. These sturgeon are endangered, and through our hatchery work, we contribute in our small but meaningful way to help restore their population so they may be well again.

Students from Anishinaabeg Kinomaagewgamig and Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig joined together to launch a ceremony that connects language, culture, and stewardship, restoring relationships with water and all of life’s gifts.

Next school year, we look forward to raising 100 sturgeon, continuing this journey of learning and care. Miigwech to everyone who came out to witness our school community at work. More great things are ahead at our school fish hatchery, Giigoonyig Enjintaawgiwaad…Place Where Fish Are Raised.

As we come to the end of another beautiful year of learning, we invite you to join us for our annual Celebration of Knowledge. This gathering honours the growth, achievements, and hard work of our Anishinaabeg Kinomaagewgamig Kinomaagaazjig throughout the 2025–2026 school year.

Come share in a morning of recognition, giveaway, and feast as we lift up our learners and the teachings they carry forward in language, culture, and identity.

Everyone is welcome to come out and be part of this celebration.

The WIFN Education Department are gathering parent and community voice as part of a 5‑year education review. The BOE met last week to plan upcoming sessions for parents/guardians, community members, and Elders. Please see the flyer below for details.

We encourage all parents and guardians of AK and BK students to attend one of the sessions. These gatherings are for adults only to engage and focus on meaningful conversations about the future of education on Walpole Island.

Chi-miigwech ndinaag (I say thanks to you all) to everyone who joined us for the Grand Opening of Giigoonyig Enjintaawgiwaad – Place Where Fish Are Raised.
It was a beautiful turnout filled with songs, teachings, and heartfelt words from our leadership, partners, and community members. Your support made this milestone truly meaningful for our school and for Bkejwanong.

For those who couldn’t attend, Dana Haggith kindly captured the day and created a video overview so our whole community can experience the opening, learn about the vision behind the hatchery, and hear the messages shared about caring for our waters and nurturing the next generations.
