On this day in 1679, Le Griffon, the first known sailing ship to travel the Upper Great Lakes, was launched on Lake Erie. In September 1679, she disappeared with her entire crew on Lake Michigan. It is not known where, or why, she disappeared.

Did you know August is ? Happy ! According to Statistics Canada, nearly 80% of Canada's peach harvest happens right here in Ontario.

Although they originated from Asia, peach trees were brought to North America during European colonization. They have grown in Ontario for over 200 years!

Open Hearth Cooking Class November 7
Enjoy the smells and sensation of cooking in a 1798 fireplace.
Heritage cook Kate Gardiner will present a history of open hearth cooking. Guests will be encouraged to be part of the hands on demonstration. Tastes and smells of Upper Canada.
Attendees will also receive a handout of recipes.

The Welland Ship Canal, the fourth and current version of the Welland Canal, was officially opened in 1932! 94 years later, this remarkable feat of engineering is still wowing visitors and serving a vital role in Canada's economy.

This photo shows the Lemoyne locking through for the official opening ceremony at Lock 7. When built in 1926, the Lemoyne was the largest ship on the Great Lakes and was more than twice as long as the then operating Third Welland Canal.
