💛 CURIOUS ABOUT SCHOOL COUNCIL? WE’VE GOT ANSWERS! 💛
Maybe you’ve wondered what school council actually does, how much time it takes, or whether you have to be “the volunteering type” to join.
Here’s the quick Q&A!
❓ What exactly is School Council?
School Council is a group of parents, school staff and other members of our school community who work together to support our students and school.
It’s an opportunity to bring the parent voice to the table, share ideas, ask questions, support school initiatives and work alongside our principal to help make our school community the best it can be.
❓ Who can join?
Any parent or guardian of a student at our school can be a member of School Council!
You don’t need previous council experience, special qualifications or a specific skill set. We want to hear from a variety of parents and perspectives.
❓ How much of a time commitment is it?
Our regular commitment is approximately one School Council meeting per month.
There are also opportunities throughout the year to help with school activities, projects and events—but you choose how involved you want to be.
You can attend the meetings without committing to volunteer at every event.
❓ Do I have to volunteer at school events?
No!
Volunteering at events is an opportunity—not a requirement to be part of School Council.
If you have time to help with an event, fantastic! If your schedule is already full, you can still contribute by attending meetings, sharing ideas and bringing the parent perspective.
❓ Do I need to attend every meeting?
We encourage members to attend as regularly as possible because the conversations and decisions are most valuable when we have a variety of parent voices at the table.
That said, life happens! We understand that families have busy schedules.
We do offer free babysitting at the school so parents can attend meetings.
❓ What do we actually talk about?
Topics can include things that affect our school community and student learning, such as:
📚 Supporting student learning
🏫 School priorities and initiatives
💡 Parent ideas and feedback
🎉 School and community activities
🤝 Parent engagement
💰 School council funding and priorities
📣 Communication between school and families
🌱 Ideas for improving our school community
School Council can also provide advice and input to the principal and school board on matters relating to the school.
❓ Do I have to know anything about education or school policy?
Absolutely not!
You are joining as a parent and member of our school community. Your experiences, ideas, questions and perspective are valuable.
You don't need to be an expert. You just need to care about our kids and our school.
❓ What if I have an idea for the school?
Bring it to School Council!
School Council is a great place to share ideas, discuss possibilities and hear different perspectives.
Not every idea will be possible, but every idea can start a conversation.
❓ Is School Council just about fundraising?
No!
While fundraising may be one activity connected to supporting the school, School Council has a much broader role.
At its heart, it is about parent engagement, supporting student learning, strengthening our school community and bringing the parent voice forward.
❓ What if I’m new to the school?
Even better!
New families bring fresh perspectives and new ideas. You don’t have to have been here for years to have something valuable to contribute.
❓ What if I’m not sure I have enough time?
Come anyway.
You don't have to take on a huge role. You don't have to volunteer for everything. You don't have to have all the answers.
Even one hour a month, one idea, one perspective or one conversation can make a difference.
