The answer to who is my favourite drummer changes all the time. It's a hard one, though I feel like I SHOULD know the answer to this fairly simple question....I am in envy of anyone who is able to blurt out one name without hesitation.
The rabbit hole deepens imagining a fictitious player who combines, say, some of the feel of one with the sound or creativity of another... But today, this week, month year(?), or longer, my favourite drummer is Art Blakey. For a jazz drummer, I ask, who would want more? Feel, drive, creative solos, masterful arrangements and tremendous spirit...a player I'm ashamed to admit I've sometimes overlooked in favour of many other historic and contemporary masters.

Congratulations to my student Chase Collins for just receiving the Lou Williamson Memorial Jazz Scholarship for his upcoming studies at Humber College! Chase was my student at Groove Studios for several years, and for the past year we worked together at my studio to prep for post secondary music school auditions. All of his hard work and talent paid off...he wound up being accepted to all the institutions he applied to including jazz programmes at some of the best schools in Canada!

Congratulations to Chase Ward, recipient of the 2021 Lou Williamson Jazz Award! Presenting the award are Chris Millington, Trustee of the Lou Williamson Scholarship Fund and Lora McIntosh, Operations Manager, Victoria Jazz Society.
