The world doesn’t reward memorization anymore. Instead, it rewards thinking. Children need to learn how to question, analyze, and make decisions.

But that doesn’t happen when they’re only focused on getting the “right answer.” Critical thinking builds confidence, independence, and real understanding. And those are the skills that actually last. Yet, the OECD’s 2022 assessment of higher education institutions across six countries found that traditional instruction often fails to develop students’ critical thinking and written communication — skills now considered essential for life beyond school.

The world has changed. It’s no longer about memorizing information. It’s about deeper thinking. A 2023 paper published in the Journal of Intelligence found that employers increasingly demand critical thinking skills, yet a significant gap exists between that demand and the preparedness of graduates (even at the college level).

Children who can think critically, adapt, and solve problems will always have an advantage. But those skills don’t come from worksheets or memorization. They come from doing, trying, failing, and figuring things out. That’s how confidence is built. And that’s what prepares them for the future.

Think about your own childhood. Did you have a patch of woods, a creek, a neighborhood to roam? Nobody was scheduling that time. You were free to just explore. And that freedom was actually doing some of the most important developmental work of your life.

The American Academy of Pediatrics directly links the rise in childhood depression and anxiety to the loss of unstructured playtime, and yet, the average elementary schooler today gets less than 30 minutes of recess a day.

We’ve replaced mud and sticks and made-up games with worksheets and structured activities and screens. And we’re watching our children pay the price for it.

At Acton Academy, outdoor unstructured play isn’t a break from learning. It IS learning. It’s where children negotiate, problem-solve, take risks, fail safely, and figure out who they are without an adult directing every move. Our Sparks studio gets almost 2 hours of unstructured outdoor play daily, and our older ES studio joins them often.

Your child doesn’t need more supervision. They need more freedom.

This world needs more critical thinkers who are able to confidently push back, question, and problem-solve. And unfortunately, endless homework and exams don’t do anything to build those skills.

The Acton model is completely different and emphasizes critical thinking from the start of the day to the end - with Socratic group discussions where children are asked to think deeply about big topics and answer questions with thought. Every day, children here are practicing how to look at a problem or question from many angles, and how to use evidence and reason to come up with an answer.

Monday mornings don’t need to be filled with dread. Instead, they can be a time of excitement, when your child is excited to go to school and be part of a community that values kindness and belonging.

At our school, children come in ready to pick up where they left off on a project they actually care about. They ar ready to reconnect with a community of learners who feel more like a family than a classroom.

That energy is exactly what happens when school is built around joy, not compliance. Here, learning feels like an adventure instead of an obligation. Children have real friendships where individuality is embraced because the premise of the model is that every child is unique.

We hear it from parents all the time. Their child used to fake sick on Mondays. Now they are upset when there is a snow day - we’re not making this up!

That shift does not happen because we work children harder. It happens because they are finally somewhere where they are treated with respect and their curiosity is nurtured. We understand that even children are capable of great things and we treat them that way!

One of the most underrated skills that no one talks about is children learning to speak up when they disagree and advocate for themselves when something is not working for them.

The skill takes practice because of the nuance of doing this while staying respectful yet firm.

Every single morning at Acton, we start the day with a launch discussion for 15 minutes. We discuss big topics and complex hypothetical scenarios. Children are encouraged to speak up and share their opinions and push back against each other in a respectful debate-style way that does not put anyone else down.

There are no right answers in the launch discussion, but there is a right way to communicate - the rules of engagement. These discussions build those communication skills while also building critical thinking skills. That’s why we start and end the day with these Socratic discussions.

The future of education is already here. In fact, it’s been here for about two decades. Acton Academy, founded in 2008, uses a unique model that includes two hours of individualized self paced learning, with an afternoon that is focused on groupwork and hands-on projects.

Here’s what our model is built on:

1. Adult Guides who mentor and coach, and gently nudge to ensure students are moving along and getting the extra push when they need it.

2. Individualized self-paced learning in the core skills, so students achieve mastery before moving on to the next topic. This prevents boredom for students who excel in a topic and prevents learning gaps in areas of struggle.

3. A focus on real-world skills that make all the difference - leadership, communication, conflict resolution, working well with others, problem-solving, mental resilience, and critical thinking.

4. A close-knit microschool environment that focuses on a culture of kindness and togetherness. There is no tolerance for bullying at Acton.

5. Real-World Experiences: Annual entrepreneurship requirements starting at age 5 (through our annual Children’s Business Fair), yearly apprenticeship requirements starting at age 12, a focus on internships in high school years.

6. A commitment to inclusivity - our reasonable annual tuition reflects our belief that a high quality education should not only be for the uber wealthy.
