📚🎶 It’s Canadian Library Month! 🇨🇦

This October, we’re celebrating our Music Library — a resource for students, faculty, visiting instructors and the public, right here at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

A few things you might not know:

✨ The Music Library has been part of the Conservatory since 1964 and now holds nearly 28,000 titles.

✨ It includes a special collection of 670+ Canadian works donated by the Canadian Music Centre.

✨ The collection preserves music by Vancouver Island composers, Victoria Conservatory of Music faculty and talented students — alongside an incredible range of scores, books and other musical resources.

🎷 We’re excited to welcome Noedy Hechavarría Duharte to the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Classical Winds and Brass department!

A Cuban-Canadian saxophonist, composer, and educator, Noedy brings more than a decade of teaching experience and a musical background spanning classical music, jazz, Afro-Cuban traditions, improvisation, and contemporary music.

Noedy welcomes saxophone students of all ages and levels, with a teaching approach that builds strong technique while encouraging creativity, confidence, and individual expression.

We had such a wonderful time taking part in BC Culture Days | Fête de la culture! 🎺🎭🎶

In partnership with Victoria Conservatory of Music and Pacific Opera Victoria, we welcomed music lovers of all ages to the Royal Theatre & McPherson Playhouse for a free afternoon of discovery. Guests got a behind-the-scenes look at a working rehearsal, tried their hand at a variety of instruments, explored an opera touch table, met our musicians and Maestro, and enjoyed performances by students from the VCM.

A huge thank you to the Royal Theatre for hosting us, and to everyone who came out to join in the fun. There’s no better way to start the season than with a lobby full of curious, excited new faces. ❤️

Spend four Wednesday evenings with Robert Holliston exploring some of his favourite 20th-century masterpieces. 🎶

Known for his engaging pre-concert talks with Pacific Opera Victoria, Robert brings his warmth, wit and deep musical knowledge to this four-week Music Appreciation course.

From Debussy and Ravel to Mahler, Prokofiev, John Adams and more, this isn’t a survey of the century’s “greatest hits.” Instead, Robert will share a personal selection of works he loves, inviting you to listen anew and perhaps discover a new favourite of your own.

🎻 The BC Fiddle Orchestra is heading to Cape Breton Island!

Thanks to everyone who helped us reach our fundraising goal and make this trip possible. We’re incredibly grateful for your support!

Next week, our young musicians will perform at the Celtic Colours International Festival on October 12, joining musicians from across Canada and around the world for a celebration of Celtic music. They’ll have the chance to perform, learn from other musicians, make new connections, and experience the music and culture of Cape Breton Island firsthand.

Starting October 14, Getting Creative with Ableton Live is a hands-on, project-focused class where students 16+ can explore music production using Ableton Live and Push, with guidance from electronic music producer Nathan Wairoa.

Greenhouse is opening its doors this weekend! 🎶

The space formerly known as Metro Studio is now Greenhouse, a newly updated performance, learning and event venue at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Today the Times Colonist featured Greenhouse and its transformation, just as the space prepares to welcome its first performers. Tonight and Saturday, Greenhouse will host BreakOut West events.

We’re excited to see this space filled with music again. 🎉
