ARADIA — THE QUEEN OF WITCHES IN ITALIAN FOLKLORE
In the world of Italian folklore and modern witchcraft, few figures have been as influential—or as debated—as Aradia. Often called the Queen of Witches, she stands at the intersection of myth, resistance, and spiritual tradition.
Aradia first gained prominence through Aradia: or the Gospel of the Witches (1899), a text published by the American folklorist Charles Godfrey Leland. According to Leland’s account, Aradia was the daughter of the moon goddess Diana and sent to Earth with a radical mission:
to teach the oppressed how to use magic against their tyrants.
Whether Leland recorded genuine surviving folklore or heavily shaped the material himself remains debated among scholars. However, what is not disputed is Aradia’s enormous cultural impact. She became:
• A symbol of defiance in the face of social and religious oppression
• A representation of female spiritual authority
• A foundational figure in certain branches of modern witchcraft, including early Wiccan and Stregheria traditions
• A mythic embodiment of freedom through knowledge and enchantment
In many retellings, Aradia teaches not only spells and charms, but also the belief that magic belongs to ordinary people, not just priests or rulers. Her story blends elements of medieval folk beliefs, goddess worship, and the political tensions of rural Italy, creating a powerful myth that speaks to those who seek empowerment in the old ways.
Today, Aradia remains a figure of fascination:
part folkloric spirit, part goddess, part revolutionary icon.
Whether seen historically, magically, or symbolically, she represents the enduring power of witchcraft as a tool for survival, identity, and resistance.
If the myths of witches, rebels, and moonlit magic intrigue you, Aradia is a name worth remembering.
