🌸Learning and Activities of VIEC Spring Program🌸

📚✨ Learning beyond the classroom

Every morning, students joined English classes to build confidence and improve real-life communication skills.

In the afternoons, they explored Victoria through fun activities like:
✔️ Downtown walking tour
✔️ Scavenger hunt
✔️ “Rags to Riches” challenge (starting with just a pen!)

With the support of local Canadian buddies, students practiced English in real-life situations and stepped outside their comfort zones 💬

They also discovered Canadian culture through visits to:
🏛️ Royal BC Museum
🏛️ British Columbia Parliament Buildings
🏰 Craigdarroch Castle

Learning + adventure = the best combination!

💬 Student’s Voice

“My host family was very kind, which helped me feel relaxed and comfortable talking with them. Whenever I asked questions, they explained everything kindly, and it made me want to ask even more questions.

During my homestay, I noticed many differences between Japan and Canada and realized how challenging it can be to communicate in English. But thanks to my host family, I was able to enjoy every moment of my 10-day stay.”

💡 Tips for Host Families

From this student’s experience, here are a few simple ways to help your student feel comfortable:

✔ Be patient and approachable – A warm and kind attitude helps students relax and speak more confidently.
✔ Encourage questions – Students often have many questions but may hesitate to ask at first.
✔ Explain things simply – Clear explanations help students learn both language and culture.
✔ Enjoy the cultural exchange – Differences between countries can become fun learning moments for everyone.

Your kindness and support make a huge difference in a student’s homestay experience. Thank you to all our amazing host families! 💙

🌏 Cultural Differences to Expect – Hosting a Student from Japan 🇯🇵

Hosting a Japanese student is a wonderful cultural exchange! Here are some fun and helpful cultural differences you may notice:

🎌 Politeness & Respect
Japanese students are often very polite and may hesitate to say “no” directly. Silence usually means they are being respectful, not unhappy.

👟 Shoes Off Indoors
In Japan, shoes are removed at the door. Your student may automatically do this—and might even bring indoor slippers!

🍽️ Meals & Manners
Students may be used to rice with most meals and might not speak up about food preferences at first. Encouraging open conversation really helps.

🙇 Shyness at First
Many Japanese students are quiet at the beginning. This doesn’t mean they’re not enjoying their stay—once they feel comfortable, they often open up quickly.

Every small difference is a chance to learn from each other—and many host families say hosting a Japanese student creates lifelong memories and friendships!
