A talented musician who plays over 15 instruments and speaks English fluently, Ana dreams of becoming a doctor and Neuroscience researcher.

Many parents wonder if their child is reading where they should be, and it is not always easy to tell. Reading ability goes beyond sounding fluently out loud. A child can read smoothly and still struggle to understand what they just read, while another child reads slowly but grasps every detail. That is why it helps to look a little closer.⁠
⁠
There are three key areas to pay attention to. Fluency, meaning can your child move through age-appropriate material at a comfortable pace without stopping constantly to sound out words. Vocabulary, meaning when they hit an unfamiliar word, do they use context clues to figure out the meaning? And comprehension, meaning after reading, can they explain what the text was about, identify the main idea, or make simple inferences?⁠
Grade-level benchmarks are a useful reference, but every child develops at their own pace. What matters most is consistent progress. More confidence over time, deeper engagement with what they are reading, those are the signs to watch for.⁠

If you are unsure where your child stands, an individualized assessment can help identify their current level and pinpoint exactly which skills to focus on next. From there, it is about building one level at a time until strong reading ability and real confidence become second nature 📖

Nearly 70% of fourth graders in this country are reading below proficiency. The majority of 9 and 10-year-olds cannot adequately understand what they are reading at a basic grade level standard. That number should alarm every parent.⁠

Here is why it matters so much. Up until third grade, kids are learning to read. Starting in fourth grade, they are reading to learn. Every subject from that point forward requires strong comprehension. If a child hits fourth grade without it, they do not just fall behind in reading; they fall behind in everything.⁠

Most parents do not realize their child is behind until it has become a serious problem. Kids are clever. They memorize patterns, guess from pictures, and learn to mask the gaps in ways that do not always show up on a report card.⁠

The first step is an honest assessment. Have your child read something at their grade level out loud, then ask them to explain it in their own words. If they cannot, that is your signal. From there, the answer is daily structured practice that builds fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension systematically, filling every gap along the way.⁠
