Our Transformative Climate Action program is co-presenting Organizing Climate Futures, a webinar series alongside Indigenous Climate Action and Research for the Frontlines.

A warm welcome to all students joining the English Language Centre at UVic (ELC) this August! 🎉 It’s wonderful to see our new and returning ELC Cultural Assistants helping everyone settle in.

Cemeteries are often seen as scary, ghoulish places, but for instructor John Adams, Victoria’s cemeteries are hidden storybooks and open-air classrooms of history.

Growing up across from Ross Bay Cemetery, John’s childhood curiosity became a lifelong passion for local history. Now a historian, author, and longtime instructor with Continuing Studies at UVic, he’s on a mission to show that cemeteries aren’t spooky—they’re rich archives of community life.

💬 “Although some people would be terrified to even set foot in one, I’m hoping to show people that cemeteries are actually nice places to go,” says John.

Most of us don’t grow up dreaming about a career in emergency management, but sometimes the best paths are the ones we don’t expect.

After graduating from the University of Victoria with a humanities degree, Erin Stockill wasn’t sure what would come next. More than a decade later, she’s an emergency program officer with the District of Saanich and an instructor in the Emergency Management for Organizational Continuity micro-certificate.

Erin believes emergency management isn’t just for specialists—these skills matter for everyone: “The material is current, relevant, and worth exploring regardless of what you do, your background, or your career goals.”
