Nadine Plett (exercise sciences) spent her co-op as a full-time assistant coach with McMaster University Men’s Volleyball. She applied her learning as a coaching studies graduate student to make evidence-based practice plans for her team. Nadine also used her skills as a statistics specialist to apply data analysis in her game plans.

On this month's episode, we hear from Lyana Patrick, who is Dakelh from BC’s Stellat’en First Nation, about how her Indigenous identity has shaped her career path.

Lyana is a professor at Simon Fraser University where she teaches courses about Indigenous health and justice; she is also an award-winning documentary filmmaker.

Her documentary about the Stellat’en and Saik’uz communities’ intergenerational fight to restore the Nachako River east of the Kitimat mountain ranges, was released last year, and draws on Lyana’s body of work going back to her time at UVic.

📸 by civil engineering student Leo Dougan (he/him), who is from the Red River Metis Nation in Manitoba, and is also Cree-Metis, Ojibwe, and Saulteaux, worked as a project engineer co-op with Gwaii Engineering. Leo was responsible for designing and drafting a variety of projects, connecting with Indigenous communities and agencies, building models and map projects, and performing construction inspections.

“There is a strong sense of community and togetherness at this company, and I think that who we are and what we do is a major aspect of that,” says Leo.

Arda Berktin (he/him, engineering) spent the summer as a software engineering intern with Dell Technologies in Austin, Texas. He worked on SSD simulations to compare the performance of different technologies. Arda made an impact by taking initiative in his projects to ensure his team produced the best possible results.

“Through my experience at AltaLink, I gained insight into the crucial roles that environmental science and geography play in the utilities sector. Working at an electricity company, I felt like I was contributing to a sustainable energy transition. The main focus of my work term was to update AltaLink's GIS layer containing the wetlands located near the company's transmission lines. I also assisted with tasks such as visiting sites to mark historical resources to ensure their protection and preservation, conduct soil sampling and testing to check for contaminants, and organize a company-wide environment fair.”

"Here I am standing at the summit of Frosty Mountain, the highest peak in Manning Park. Our tasks for this week were to build new tent pads at the nearby Frosty Creek campsite and install new trail signage on the way to the summit.

All of these efforts will go towards protecting the beautiful alpine and sub-alpine habitats in the area by encouraging park users to tread lightly and recreate responsibly."

"During co-op, I took at trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta in the southern region of Vietnam. International co-op is a fantastic opportunity to learn about other cultures and step outside of your comfort zone. My role as a Research & Project Development Assistant surrounded working on tasks related to advancing UN SDG 4, quality education. Specifically, I completed literature reviews for academic activities of the centre, as well as researched potential international donors for grants, bursaries, etc."

📸 Piper McWilliam (she/her, biology) explored her passion for marine biology while working for the Prince Rupert Port Authority. As an environmental and sustainability co-op student, Piper helped ensure environmentally appropriate development by carrying out ecological sampling, implementing sustainability initiatives and more.

“Working with the Prince Rupert Port Authority allowed me to improve the skills learned through my time at UVic such as statistics, ecological sampling, and research.”

Piper’s co-op helped to support her future career goals in marine biology by connecting her with organizations such as Ocean Wise, Ocean Networks Canada, and Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Ainsley de Bruijn (she/her, business/commerce) gained experience as a field sales/marketing representative with Silvano Marone over the summer. She worked at various Home Depot locations showcasing products, performing live demonstrations, and building displays.
