Rainy Sunday morning on my desk. Gathering inspo from things I’ve clipped to things I’ve collected. My favorite mark making supplies and a fresh cup of coffee. Inspiration for art making is everywhere, you just need to pay attention and notice what draws you in and makes you stop for a moment to have a closer look. Happy rainy Sunday morning 🤍

The really expensive mistake I made and what I see other artists doing now!
When I first started learning watercolor, I did what most beginners do. I bought the big set.
72 set of watercolor paint. A bunch of brushes I saw a popular artist using (even the weird shapes ones), I had no idea what a dagger brush was!! Three different paper pads. I spent somewhere north of $300 and laid it all out on my table feeling ready.
Then when I sat down to paint and not only couldn't figure out where to start, I kind of froze. I felt like everything was so professional, shiny, new… it actually made me very nervous to mess up my supplies vs. make me want to dig in and get started!
Here's what I know now: more supplies doesn't mean more progress. It usually means more paralysis.
The painters who improve fastest start small. Minimal. A few good paints. One pad of quality paper. A few key brushes that are simple to use.
The rest comes once you actually know what you're doing and understand what you personally like and prefer. After all, what works for one artist, doesn’t mean it works for the way you enjoy painting and creaing.

3 minutes. 1 brush. 2 colors.
That’s all I had yesterday. Not a studio session or a bunch of time for a planned painting, just a few stolen minutes, my sketchbook, and my rose bush in the garden about to bloom again for the second time this season.
A simple little rose bud. Nothing fancy, but now the last page of my sketchbook has a tiny reminder of this exact moment - the day I noticed my roses were coming back. That’s it!
I share this because I know how easy it is to tell yourself you don’t have enough time to paint or that it’s not worth getting everything out for just a few minutes. But this little rose bud on the last page of my sketchbook? It’s one of my favourite things I painted this week!
You don’t need a full afternoon. You need 3 minutes, a window, and whatever is blooming outside it. That’s how simply you can work on your art, even on the busiest days.

Confession… I used to think a blank sketchbook meant I had nothing to say.
I’d buy beautiful ones and imagine filling them easily with pages and page of art, and then I’d barely touch them. Not because I didn’t want to paint. Because every time I opened to that first page, I felt this strange pressure to make it worthy.
Something good enough for all that beautiful white space. So I’d close it and wait until I felt more ready.
The sketchbooks would pile up and I’d think to myself “one day”, or “when I have more time”. Each story I’d tell myself was just an excuse.
What I know now after years of painting and teaching is that a filled sketchbook is more beautiful and valueable than a brand new, empty sketchbook! It’s where your best work comes from.
The practice in your sketchbook!
The pages you fill without pressure. The studies that go sideways. The little floral you painted in 20 minutes just because you felt like it. And PS you don’t have to show a single person what you create in them!
A sketchbook practice changes everything and if your goal is to get better at painting, sketching, creating… then you NEED a sketchbook practice!
