Cloverdale PAC is pleased to share that we are welcoming Kristen Yarker, Registered Dietician, to present (virtually) to parents and care providers a workshop on Yummy, Healthy Packed Lunches. Join us on Tuesday April 18 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm

"Packing lunches is a thankless task. Even in today's world where we can access all the recipes on the internet from the palm of our hand, it's so easy to get stuck in a rut, packing the same old thing for your kids every day. Studies show that it takes between 10 and 30 exposures to a new food before a child will eat it. Packed lunches are a fantastic opportunity to introduce kids to new foods. Parents will leave the workshop knowing how to create packed lunches (and snacks) that help children to meet their nutrition needs and try new foods on their own."

You asked and we answered - Community Values Coupon Book deadline has been extended. We have had many people inquire asking if it was possible to wait until Monday to return final orders and coupon books. Yes! All orders and books are now due back Monday, October 17. This gives families the weekend to finish up their selling.

Remember that this unique book is completely local to Victoria and surrounding areas. This book sells for $35 with 40% of each book sold going directly to the PAC.

The coupon discounts are either percentage off, dollars off, or buy one get one offers. There are incentives for students and classes to sell as many books as they can. If you do not wish to participate in this fundraiser please ensure you return the coupon book to the classroom. Any books not returned and no paid for will be invoiced to the student's family.


Incentives include:

• Mystery prize pack for each book sold (sell 12 books and you are guaranteed 1 of each collectable, sell 13 books and you are guaranteed 1 of each collectable as well as a special edition golden collectable and a free kids meal from Dairy Queen)

• Name in the draw to win a Dairy Queen ice cream cake for each book sold

• Sell 2 books and receive a free dilly bar or ice cream sandwich from Dairy Queen

• Top selling student will win a 4 pack of tickets to a Victoria Royals hockey game

• Every class that sells 50% of their books will win ice cream treats for the whole class.


If you wish to purchase more books than the one sent home simply fill out the order form in the bag and return it along with payment to the school and your additional books will be sent home the next day. Books can be purchased by cash (exact cash only, no change will be given) or cheque (made payable to CTS PAC).

Today your child will come home with a bag containing a coupon book, a parent letter, a brochure that tells you about this new fundraiser (includes an order form), and an envelope with your child’s information on it to remit payments.

Hello Cloverdale Families,

Happy September! We are excited to welcome everyone back to school. We hope you had a wonderful summer.

A few reminders for the first few days of school for new grade 1 to grade 5 students. (Kindergarten families, please follow the instructions you received in July).

September 6th, 2022 students are in session from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Please bring a recess snack. We ask that you do not bring your school supplies on the first day. When the bell rings at 9:00am, students will line up outside at their same spot as last school year. New students will meet at the front of the school. Teachers will greet students outside and bring them inside. At 11:30 am, students will be dismissed and parents can meet children outside at the same point as drop off.

September 7th, 2021, is a full day of school. Please ensure your student has a lunch, a recess snack, and a pencil. Students will not need all of their school supplies until they are in their new classes. Our regular school day will be 8:45am-2:37pm.

We do not yet know which day we will move to our new classes. We will email parents the night before we move to let you know that we will be moving the next morning and to tell you the division number your child(ren) will be looking for when they arrive for their morning line up. Please diligently monitor your emails. The morning of the day that we move classes support staff will be on hand to help students find the correct line for their new classes. Please send school supplies this day.

Parking will be at a premium. Please do not park in Thrifty Foods’ parking lot. There are only a few spots on Linwood. Please consider biking, or parking a few blocks away from the school and walking.

Pack in/Pack Out
As part of the overall health and safety plans for schools, we will be asking students and staff to take home all items they have brought with them to school for lunch or snack. This includes garbage and compost.
Please make sure your child is able to independently open all food containers and packages that are sent to school.

School Supplies
For those who ordered through Monks, the PAC group will send details about pickup. The supply lists are on our school website. See the lists here: https://cloverdale.sd61.bc.ca/parent-info/school-supplies/

Indoor shoes
We appreciate it if you are able to send a pair of clean shoes to stay at school for use during the day. They need not be new, but should have non-marking soles, be clean and correctly fitting. This helps our custodians keep our building clean, especially when the weather turns, and protects our gym floor. Please make sure they are labelled with your child's name. Indoor shoes should be brought at the same time as school supplies (when we move to new classrooms).

We are truly looking forward to our year together and know with everyone working together as a team, we can make this a great learning experience. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Hello CTS Families,

It is once again the time of year for our annual Christmas Poinsettia Fundraiser. This year we are offering more variety of sizes and colors!

Yesterday your child brought home a brochure with all of the options and an order form.

If you wish to order any plants please return the form along with payment to the school no later than Thursday, November 4. Please note that we are not able to accept late orders.

Once again we are offering the option to e-transfer your payment. The email address to send e-transfers for this fundraiser is [email protected]. Please use the word 'fall' as the security word or answer to the security question. Include your child's name and division number with the e-transfer and indicate you have e-transferred on the order form (which you still return to the school).

If you do not wish to pay by e-transfer, payment can be made by cheque (made payable to CTS PAC) or cash (exact amount only - no change will be given) to the school along with your order form.

SCHOOL UPDATES:

Principal’s Message
October has been a very busy month at Cloverdale Traditional School. Two weeks ago, we hosted parent/teacher interviews. These meetings are important in establishing strong partnerships and good communication to support our students in their success at school. Thank you to parents and staff for their time and efforts. If you were unable to attend parent teacher interviews, and haven’t already done so, please make alternate arrangements to check in and discuss your child’s educational program with the teacher. Classrooms continue to be active, meaningful learning environments, participation in nightly home reading is increasing.
We have had some exiting news: The Plumose Anemone in our Sequaria has reproduced. We have several very small new ones.
Constable Omoding will be at Cloverdale, presenting Halloween safety talks for our students. Please review safe Halloween behaviors with your children as a follow up to these presentations. Cloverdale will be celebrating Black and Orange day on Friday. October 29. No costumes will be worn to school, but all students will be encouraged to show spirit by wearing black and orange.
Our earthquake drill was very successful, as students discussed ways to keep themselves safe.
Our photo retake day went smoothly, also!
Friday will be a teacher professional development day, with no students in session. Our teachers have wide ranging passions and are working on interesting new learning for themselves: outdoor education, math workshops, technology initiatives, science planning, and much more.
Thank you to everyone for what is turning out to be a very productive year!

Black & Orange Day
On Friday, October 29 we encourage all students who would like to participate to wear black and orange clothing in recognition of Halloween. Please do not send children in costumes.

Emergency Forms
Have you returned your Emergency Release forms yet? In the event of an emergency where reunification is required, having these forms on file at the school ensure that your child can be released to parents and emergency contacts that you have designated efficiently. Without this form on file we will not be able to release a child to an emergency designated contact. Release to a parent will be a lengthier process as well as forms will need to be filled out at the time. If you need another copy, please let the classroom teacher know.

A reminder that this fundraiser closes on Monday, October 25. Please send all payments and unsold books back by this date.

The CTS PAC is offering poinsettia’s for sale this year once again. Please watch for more info and an order form to come home Monday. Note that this fundraiser has as tight turn around and that we are unable to accept late orders.

SCHOOL UPDATES:

Principal’s Message
It is hard to believe we are already into October. The weather is changing as we settle into fall. Please remember that the children at Cloverdale spend time outdoors daily, in most weather conditions. It is important that the students come ready for the variable weather that Victoria is known for, with rain gear and warm clothing if necessary. We know that this outdoor time is beneficial to the health and wellness of our students, and are expecting families to please help students remember appropriate clothing.
Thank you to parents for taking the time this week to speak with teachers. These important conversations give us all a bigger picture of the programming happening in classes and the individual needs of students, in order to progress their learning. Although we cannot host families in the school yet, we have found these meetings a valuable way to remain connected. We had a super turn out!
We had our very first fire drill of the year last week! The students were spectacular; very well behaved and respectful of the seriousness of this practice.
Thanks to our generous families we raised over $770 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Way to go!
We are well on our way to another successful year.

Photo Retakes
Photo retakes are on October 20. If your child misses photo day, or you wish to have their photo retaken, please send a note to the teacher through the agenda planner or through an email to the teachers so they are aware of who requires a photo retake.

Volunteers Needed
Our school LOVES to read and consequently our library exchanges hundreds of books each week. If you have a bit of spare time to help us with reshelving some of those books, please contact our Teacher Librarian, Ms. Aerts, at [email protected]. No experience is necessary, we will show you how it's done. As with any person entering our building, volunteers must be double vaccinated and will be required to wear a mask unless they have a medical exemption. Thanks for your consideration.

As you prepare for the end of the month celebrations with fun costumes and food, can you find a minute to locate 3 gently used books for babies and toddlers and drop them off in the pink bin in the school office. Thank you to all the parents that joined us for our first PAC meeting of the year. It was so wonderful to see so many new and returning faces. PAC meetings are held every two months and are a great way to stay up to date with what’s happening around the school and to connect with other parents and our Principal Ms. Susan Ottenbreit and our Vice-Principal Mrs. Barbara Sapsford. The next PAC Meeting is Tuesday November 2, 2021 over Microsoft Teams. Look for the meeting link in an email closer to the date.

What Happens When There’s a COVID Exposure at CTS?
As many of you know, there has been a significant increase in positive COVID-19 cases amongst elementary school aged children since the start of school in September. We’ve heard from many concerned parents that they would appreciate more information regarding school exposures. It’s been our experience that if there is a positive COVID-19 exposure *in your child’s classroom*, you should receive an email notifying you of the dates of this exposure from Island Health.

Furthermore, there are very specific contact tracing investigations that take place, in which Island Health determines who should be self-isolating, who should self-monitor, and the appropriate next steps. We found it reassuring to hear from our admin team that a seating chart is kept on file at the office for each classroom to assist public health with contact tracing.

It is our understanding that they contact families by phone who have a child that will need to isolate and they email only the affected classroom. BC School Covid Tracker
Many parents are seeking additional information about school COVID-19 exposures this year. A parent-run database called “BC School Covid Tracker” continues to track school exposures across BC this year. This information can be found on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/BCSchoolCovidTracker or on the web here: https://bcschoolcovidtracker.knack.com/bc-school-covid-tracker /

Many CTS parents would appreciate it if families would report any COVID-19 exposures to this database. Please note: your identity will remain confidential in the BC School Covid Tracker database.
