The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions amplifies research and insights to answer complex climate change issues. We believe climate change is best solved through collaborative approaches to research and knowledge sharing. By taking a values-based approach, we bring diverse forms of expertise and knowledge together to contribute to lasting solutions. PICS is hosted and led by the University of Victoria, in collaboration with Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Northern British Columbia.

In June 2026, two research assistants from the PICS-funded Building Rural & Remote Community Climate Resilience project presented at the Canadian Association of Geographers Annual Meeting at the University of Victoria.

Their poster featured interactive elements that encouraged viewers to share their vision for fire-resilient communities through a wheel-based conceptual framework, as well as stories and examples of what communities are already doing to build climate resilience.

Is your organization hosting a climate action event?

PICS Community Climate Action Events funding supports events that help turn conversations and ideas into meaningful climate action.

Strong proposals will show how an event can:

💡 build knowledge, skills, or momentum for climate action
🤝 connect people and strengthen community capacity
➡️ lead to action, collaboration, or next steps beyond the event
🫶 centre climate justice and reconciliation

Your event could take many forms — from a community workshop or gathering to a public conversation, learning event, or other creative approach to bringing people together around climate action.

Have an idea? PICS can provide $2,500 to $5,000 to help make it happen.

Today honours the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children who were taken from their families and communities and the survivors of residential schools, while recognizing the ongoing impacts of this history.

It is a day to remember, to listen, to learn, and to reflect on our shared responsibility for reconciliation.

🎒 Are your household emergency supplies ready?

Be ready to evacuate or shelter in place by keeping these items in your home or car (all together in a kit if you have space).

In addition to the general list, adapt your go bags to fit your household’s health, cultural, and personal needs. Consider the needs of your pets, young children, and other dependents while preparing your supplies.

Ensure all members of your household can locate these supplies and that you check them every year to ensure any perishables haven’t spoiled, all the equipment still works, and the documents are up-to-date.

Past interns have worked on projects across B.C. addressing real-world climate challenges—from analyzing agricultural climate data and planning for drought to revitalizing ancestral food systems and assessing electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Every organization and community has different climate priorities. That's why the PICS Climate Internship Program supports a wide range of projects that deliver value while giving students hands-on experience in the field.

Could a student help move one of your organization's climate priorities forward?

Eligible B.C. organizations can apply for up to $15,000 to hire a student from UBC, SFU, UNBC or UVic.

BC’ leads climate innovation, and PICS is supporting that vital work through $1.15 million in new funding to research this fall. 🍂

Through PICS’ Climate Foresight, Policy Spark, and World Weaving programs, 14 research teams connected to our partner universities are advancing work on some of the province’s most pressing and emerging climate challenges.

The funded projects explore topics including wildfire resilience, watershed restoration, clean technology adoption, climate-health connections, critical minerals, emerging climate risks, and First Nations-led research.

Together, they demonstrate how research partnerships can generate practical insights, inform policy, and support climate action grounded in community priorities.
