Soak A Senior

Last Friday our community gathered in the sunshine to celebrate an amazing achievement: raising more than $1,200 for the Terry Fox Foundation!

To recognize their efforts, the students who logged the most laps or raised the most funds earned the chance to "Soak a Senior", choosing a senior student to receive a bucket of icy water overhead. With plenty of enthusiastic staff support, lots of laughter, and a few very wet seniors, the courtyard was full of energy and school spirit.

While the water buckets made for unforgettable memories, the real celebration was the impact our students made together. Events like these remind us of the power of community, connection, and shared purpose.

Life in Residence = Community, Culture & Connection!

The past few weeks have been packed with memorable moments in our boarding community. From a vibrant Mexico Independence Day celebration featuring tacos, piñatas, music, games, and plenty of laughter, to a sunny afternoon picnic at Willows Beach (with a few brave students even taking a dip in the chilly ocean!), our students have been making the most of every opportunity to connect.

Back on campus, there was cookie baking, Sunday ice cream treats, and one of the standout events of the term: Hot Pot Night, where nearly 40 students came together to share a delicious meal, experience a new culture, and build new friendships.

These moments are what make Brookes special. With students from around the world living and learning together, every shared meal, celebration, and adventure helps strengthen the sense of belonging that makes our residence feel like a home away from home.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

One of the highlights of September is seeing our students head outdoors together. Our fall camps are designed to help students build friendships, strengthen their sense of belonging, and start the year with shared experiences that become touchstones for the months ahead. Bringing together young people from Canada and around the world, these experiences create opportunities for students to learn from one another, form new connections, and build the community that makes our school so special.

Whether paddling on a lake, hiking coastal trails, tackling team challenges, or gathering around a campfire, students have opportunities to step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and discover new strengths in themselves and their peers. Just as our students recently explored local ecosystems and Indigenous knowledge with ethnobotanist J.B. Williams, our camps encourage them to engage directly with the remarkable natural environment that surrounds us and to deepen their connection to the place we call home.

Learning from the land.

This week, our students joined local Indigenous ethnobotanist J.B. Williams for a guided walk through the forests and trails surrounding our campus. Through stories, traditional knowledge, and hands-on exploration, they discovered the deep connections between people, plants, and place.

From learning how Indigenous Peoples have stewarded these lands for thousands of years to tasting the surprisingly citrus flavours of fir needles - "nature's Gatorade" - the experience encouraged everyone to see the natural world through a new lens.

A meaningful reminder that the landscape around us is filled with knowledge, history, and connections waiting to be discovered.

Connection was on full display at our Terry Fox Run last Friday. Under beautiful fall sunshine, students and staff ran, walked, and cheered each other on while raising more than $1,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Together, we honoured Terry's legacy and showed the power of a community united by purpose.

Dorm life is off to an incredible start!

From welcoming back familiar faces to meeting new students from around the world, our residence is already buzzing with energy, friendship, and excitement. Students have embraced new challenges with maturity, built meaningful connections, and helped create a warm, welcoming community from day one.

With trips, weekend adventures, and unforgettable memories ahead, we can't wait to see these friendships and confidence continue to grow. Here's to an amazing year in dorms!

Seeing a group of teenagers voluntarily awake before sunrise might be the most remarkable achievement of the year!

Before dawn last Friday, our DP2 students gathered beside Esquimalt lagoon to watch the sun rise over the mountains of BC. It was a special morning of connection as the graduating class took a moment to reflect on the journey ahead.

With university applications, IB exams, graduation events, and exciting new adventures on the horizon, Senior Sunrise marks the beginning of a year that will challenge, inspire, and bring this class even closer together. We can't wait to see where the year takes them!

The Gryphon Has Spoken!

A little magic, a lot of excitement and some very important decisions!

Our new students stepped forward one by one as Mr. B held the Gryphon above their heads. Lynx, Eagle, Wolf or Orca? Once the Gryphon had spoken, the newest House members joined their Housemates to cheers and celebration. Even the new teachers are chosen!

Connection was at the heart of our first day back.

Today, our students spent the day building connections with their classmates, teachers, and new surroundings. Through presentations, team challenges, campus tours, games, and even a photo scavenger hunt, they explored the school, shared experiences, and began forming the relationships that will support their learning journey this year.

As we continue our monthly theme of Connection, it was wonderful to see our school community already coming together with curiosity, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

What better way to celebrate the end of the school year than with an afternoon at one of Vancouver Island's most beautiful beaches?
Our MYP5 students spent their final afternoon together at Witty's Lagoon, enjoying spike ball, discovering local marine life, soaking up the sunshine, and simply relaxing after a busy and rewarding year of learning. The stunning weather and spectacular coastal scenery provided the perfect backdrop for friendship, reflection, and celebration.
As another school year comes to a close, we wish all of our students and families a safe, memorable, and adventure-filled summer. Here's to making the most of everything that beautiful Vancouver Island has to offer!
