🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
We acknowledge that the University of Victoria is located on the traditional territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt) Peoples, and that the lands on which we live, learn and work have longstanding relationships with the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples.
Truth and Reconciliation is about confronting Canada’s colonial history, recognizing its ongoing impacts, and supporting Indigenous peoples, cultures and communities today. It also means listening to Indigenous voices, learning from Survivors and Elders, and making space for Indigenous people to tell their own stories and histories.
Residential schools are one part of that history. For generations, Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families, languages and cultures. In recent years, investigations at former residential school sites have brought renewed attention to potential unmarked burials and to truths that Survivors and Indigenous communities had shared for decades.
Recent conversations at UVic also show why amplifying Indigenous voices and challenging misinformation matters. Reconciliation is not a one-day commitment. It requires continued learning, listening and action.
