Recently, Dennis and I were celebrating our 19th happily un-married anniversary at Harrison Hot Springs.

Midday, we had the entire pool to ourselves - so I did what I’ve loved since I was a kid - somersaults, spins, rolls…floating forever.

And as I glided through the water, I remembered something…
When I was 5, I failed my very first swimming lesson.

At the time, I thought it meant I wasn’t a good swimmer.
But as I look back on that now, I suddenly saw the real truth.

I didn’t get that badge of approval - because I can’t swim.
I didn’t get it because I don’t like being told what to do.💡

Not then. And not now. (Dennis laughed so hard at my sudden revelation - that he almost drowned - apparently this wasn’t really news to him 😂)

Just like today, as a kid I wanted to dive deep, not tread water.
But to get that ‘badge of approval’ I learned to follow rules that were never mine.

And that says everything about how so many women forget who they really are.

We’ve spent decades following everyone else’s rules:
Be good. Be grateful. Be nice. Be small. Be quiet.
