A visitor in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago has been fined after using a boat horn to deliberately wake a sleeping polar bear. According to authorities, the person wanted the bear to move so they could get a better photo. The incident was reported to officials, who determined that the behavior violated local rules protecting polar bears from unnecessary disturbance.

Polar bears are legally protected in Svalbard, where people are required to keep their distance and avoid intentionally disturbing them. Officials say the rules are especially important because approaching or disrupting the animals can affect their natural behavior — even when the goal is simply getting a photo.
