Struggling to make your grooves feel faster without getting sloppy?
Here’s the trick:
Take a half-time backbeat and use tempo to “train” your brain into hearing it as normal time.
🥁 Start at 70 BPM
📈 Slowly build up to 140 BPM
🔒 Lock it in at 140 and really feel the groove
⬇️ Drop the click back to 70 BPM
🧠 Play the SAME beat… but think in 8th notes
And just like that… you’re playing a normal-time backbeat 💥
Next week we’ll do the same thing with different kick patterns 👀

Working on your single-stroke control? 🥁
Here’s a 6-stroke roll from ‘s single-stroke development program.
R L R L R L
Start on the snare to lock it in.
Then move it around the kit.
Next step: add the kick.

Save this, try it slow, and follow for the next step.
If faster kick patterns are killing your groove, this is where to start!
Start with a half-time backbeat played at a moderate slow tempo. This will open you up so you can start to feel more in control and eventually move faster with your kick while holding down the groove!
Next step? We flip it into “Normal time” back beat!
Follow so you don’t miss the next step 🥁
Been having a blast working on this tom groove from “Throw Away Your Television” by the with my students 🥁
Groove, feel it, & having fun with it.
Love playing that 7 section from ‘s “It’s Only Smiles.” I’ve been grinding on this one for a while. One day I’ll groove as hard as … a guy can dream, right? 😅🥁

🥁 This is something you’ll start with in your very first classes with me. 🥁
It’s a simple way for you to build real control, coordination, and independence right from day one.
• A: You lock in the stickings and build balance
• B: You apply them to a rhythm so it feels musical
• C: You level it up with independence—hands and feet working together
You start slow, you stay consistent, and you’ll feel your drumming get cleaner and more confident week after week.
If you want to work through this together and make it feel natural behind the kit, schedule a lesson with me.
