🎄The Holiday season can be an overstimulating time of year for someone on the autistic spectrum. Some will appreciate the new high impact sensory stimulation, for others this can be a struggle.

❄️Some people with autism find change difficult. Changes to routines, environment and social expectations can mean that Christmas can be a confusing and challenging time.

🧠Neurofeedback aims to promote healthy brainwave patterns.

Brain cells produce electrical pulses that communicate with each other. This produces brainwaves. These brainwaves show how much brain activity is happening when we think, feel and behave in different ways.

Brainwaves change according to how you’re feeling or what you’re doing. For example, your brainwaves are slower when you’re relaxed or sleeping, and faster when you’re alert and concentrating.

In neurofeedback therapy, an electroencephalographic (EEG) machine monitors your brainwave patterns. These patterns show up on a computer screen as lines, graphs or even simple games. You can consciously control your brainwave activity to make the lines or graphs move.

🌈Children living with Autism often thrive within an organized environment. To make daily home life easier for you and your child, be consistent.

Adapt their living environment to ensure you are consistent in the way you interact with your child and how, as a family, you deal with any challenging behaviors.

Stick to a schedule with regular times for meals, any therapy sessions, preschool and bedtimes. Try to aim to keep disruptions to this routine to a minimum and prepare your child for any unavoidable changes in advance.

If possible, provide a private space at home where your child can feel secure, relax and play safely? Safety proof an area of the house by using visual cues such as colored tape, cushions or blankets that can provide a haven during any tantrums or dangerous behaviors.

🌈 “Why does my child need motor skills?”

Children need to “understand how to move and complete tasks independently, and to be able to explore the world around them, which promotes cognitive, speech, and sensory development, and gives them confidence and independence, which promotes skills such as executive function.”

Giving children opportunities to develop an awareness of their bodies will serve them for the rest of their life. Early childhood is a critical time for learning through unobstructed play, especially outside. The tabletop work will be there for them when they are older. Strong motor skills will support their ability to sustain and attend to academic learning throughout their school journey.
