Language courses at Langara College include regular sessions in the language lab to improve students' experience in speaking and listening and facilitate assessment and self-assessment of oral production and pronunciation. See Sanako's article below on the advantages of language labs for language learning.
"Language labs have revolutionised the way students engage with language learning. Traditional classroom settings often limit the opportunities for students to practice speaking and listening skills, which are crucial for language acquisition. Language labs, however, provide an immersive environment where students can actively participate in interactive exercises. This hands-on approach not only makes learning more enjoyable but also significantly boosts student engagement. By incorporating multimedia resources such as audio and video functionalities, language labs create a dynamic learning atmosphere that keeps students motivated and focused.
Moreover, language labs facilitate real-time feedback, allowing students to immediately understand and correct their mistakes. This instant feedback loop is essential for effective learning, as it helps students to quickly grasp the nuances of a new language. The ability to practice in a controlled environment also reduces the fear of making mistakes, encouraging students to take more risks and experiment with their language skills. This increased engagement and willingness to participate are key factors in accelerating language proficiency....
The ability to record and playback their own speech also allows students to self-assess and make necessary adjustments. By offering a range of interactive and engaging activities, language labs significantly improve language proficiency and prepare students for real-world communication....
Furthermore, language labs support collaborative learning, which is particularly beneficial for social learners. Features such as group or pair discussions encourage students to interact and learn from each other. This collaborative approach not only enhances language skills but also fosters a sense of community and teamwork...."
The benefits of using language labs in classrooms - Sanako The blog post explores the benefits of using language labs in classrooms, specifically focusing on how they enhance student engagement.
