Congratulations to Dr. Danièle Behn Smith, Janene Erickson, and Dr. Kate Jongbloed on receiving funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Strengthening Resilient and Equitable Public Health Systems (STEPS) initiative.

Indigenous physicians do more than provide care. They are researchers, educators, advocates, policy leaders, and system leaders whose work helps shape more equitable healthcare systems for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.

Dr. Danièle Behn Smith, who is Métis from the Red River Valley and Eh Cho Dene from Fort Nelson First Nation, Janene Erickson, who is Dakelh from Nak'azdli Whut'en, and Dr. Kate Jongbloed are co-leading Fixing Ourselves: Evidence-informed Eradication of Indigenous-specific Racism to Advance True Reconciliation in Settler Population and Public Health Systems.

Grounded in Puglaas Jody Wilson-Raybould's learn, understand, act framework, the project will examine how public health systems engage with their reconciliation responsibilities, identify examples of meaningful reconciliation in practice, and co-create a framework to support systems-level change. By addressing Indigenous-specific racism within public health systems, the research aims to strengthen accountability and support more equitable public health systems.

Congratulations to the entire team on this well-deserved achievement. Thank you for your leadership and commitment to advancing research that will help create more equitable public health systems for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.

Inspiré du cadre « apprendre, comprendre, agir » de Puglaas Jody Wilson-Raybould, le projet examinera la façon dont les systèmes de santé publique assument leurs responsabilités en matière de réconciliation, mettra en lumière des exemples concrets de pratiques porteuses et élaborera un cadre visant à soutenir une transformation durable des systèmes. En s'attaquant au racisme visant spécifiquement les peuples autochtones dans les systèmes de santé publique, cette recherche contribuera à renforcer la responsabilisation et à favoriser des systèmes de santé publique plus équitables.

Today, July 9th, we recognize Nunavut Day, a celebration of Inuit self-determination, culture, and the creation of Nunavut as Canada's newest territory! The day commemorates the passage of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act and the Nunavut Act by Parliament in 1993, marking a historic milestone on the path to establishing Nunavut in 1999.

Nunavut Day is celebrated across the territory through community gatherings, cultural performances, traditional games, music, storytelling, feasts and opportunities to learn about the history, languages and cultures of Nunavummiut. It is a time to honour the enduring strength, leadership and contributions of Inuit Peoples, while celebrating the vibrant communities, knowledge systems, and traditions that continue to shape Nunavut and Canada.

We encourage everyone to take time to learn more about Inuit history, culture, and the significance of Nunavut in advancing Inuit self-determination! 💙
