Hosted by the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies, and the Centre for Climate Justice this year’s lecture features Sharon H. Venne (masko-nôcokwêsiw manitoukan) — Cree legal scholar from Muskeg Lake Cree First Nation in Treaty 6, Saskatchewan.

Venne has worked extensively at the United Nations, contributing research that helped inform the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). She has dedicated her career to advancing Indigenous rights, treaty implementation, and self-determination.

The 35th Annual Women's Memorial March honours and remembers women and gender-diverse people whose lives were lost in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Held each year on February 14th, the march brings courage and commitment to end the violence that Indigenous women, girls, two spirit and trans people in the community face daily.
UBC Indigenous students, staff and faculty are invited to make Medicine Pouches with at the UBC Longhouse prior to the on Friday February 13th. We hope to see you there and in attendance at the march!

Join Musqueam-Chinese Elder Larry Grant, Elder-in-residence at UBC’s First Nations House of Learning, and publishing veteran Scott Steedman in celebrating their new book Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong.

This personal and historical memoir is conveyed through a series of conversations between Larry and Scott as they revisit pivotal places from Larry’s life including the Musqueam reserve, Chinatown, the Vancouver docks, and the site of the Mission residential school. Larry's life story traces some of the most significant and painful events in Canadian history, from Chinese immigration and the Head Tax to residential schools, disenfranchisement, and the long road to Indigenous cultural revival. Larry frames reconciliation as an ongoing process rather than a finished goal and invites readers to reflect on how we might reconcile with ourselves, with each other, and with the land.

Candace Galla was born and raised on the island of Hawaiʻi in Pāhala, Kaʻū. Her research and scholarship focus on Hawaiian language and Indigenous languages at the intersection of education, revitalization, digital technology, well-being, traditional and cultural practices, and policy and planning; and decolonizing and Indigenizing the academy to create pathways for Indigenous thinkers and scholars, and scholarship at the local, national, and global level.

In this global role, Dr. Galla will work with international partners to strengthen education and policy frameworks that uphold linguistic diversity and self-determination for Indigenous and non-dominant language communities.

Sunday, November 16, is a day to remember the contributions of Louis Riel in defending Métis freedoms and paving the way for Indigenous rights.🪶

Louis Riel is best known for defending the rights of Métis people to practice their culture and way of life. He is remembered for his contributions to all Indigenous people. His legacy lives on through to this day, bringing light to the issues and the people he fought to represent. 🌟
