Have you ever wondered how babies learn languages? You’ve come to the right place! 🌟

The director of our centre and developmental psychologist, Dr. Janet Werker, answers some common questions about bilingualism in babies and early language development.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them in the comments and one of our wonderful team members will be happy to reply. We’d love to hear from you!

Curious what a visit to our centre looks like? Here’s a peek into what to expect from an EEG visit at the UBC Infant Studies Centre! 🌟

When you arrive, parents will learn about the study while your little one explores our play area filled with toys. Then, we’ll gently fit a comfy EEG cap while your child sits on your lap and watches bright, colourful videos paired with rhythmic sounds — a fun and engaging way to capture their amazing brain activity!

In just one visit, your baby becomes an infant scientist—earning a special UBC Infant Studies Centre shirt and a “Bachelor’s degree” for their hard work! 🎓

Meet one of our infant scientists, Maya!

Maya participated in one of our EEG studies run by Dr. Erica Flaten and earned her dean of science title ⭐️

This little cap measures the electrical activity always present from the surface of the head, it is completely safe for both babies and adults!

Is your little one between 9 and 11 months old?

UBC Infant Studies Centre has a NEW in-person EEG study—and is looking for curious babies (and their grown-ups!) to explore how rhythm might help infants learn!

🎶 About the study 🎶
Our researches are interested in how babies begin to learn to match words with objects. Specifically, whether the rhythm in speech can help align babies’ brain activity and visual behaviour during word learning. To test this, we will measure your baby’s natural brain activity using EEG, and their visual behaviour using eye-tracking while they listen to some repeated phrases paired with objects.

EEG is completely safe for both babies and adults, and has no harmful effects. It simply records the electrical activity that is always present from the surface of the head.

As a thank you, your baby will receive a small gift, honorary degree certificate, and a cute photo!

Hi! We are the UBC Infant Studies Centre and we study how our little ones learn language! Specifically, we are interested in how babies and kids perceive speech and acquire language during the first few years of life. Our centre’s research focuses on both monolingual and bilingual environments.

We would love to have you and your little one come up to our centre at UBC to participate! If you aren’t able to visit us in-person, no worries! We also have online studies available.
