One thing people often assume is that a great educator has to be a teacher.

But that’s not always true.

Great educators can be anyone.

👩‍🔬 A scientist.
📚 A librarian.
🦕 Someone working in a museum.
👨‍👩‍👧 A parent.
🩺 A doctor.
🙋‍♀️ A friend.

What matters most isn’t the title someone holds — it’s the qualities they bring to learning.

At My Tutor Time, our tutors come from many different backgrounds.

They vary in age, education level, professional paths, and personal life experiences.

Some are certified teachers.
Some are university students or researchers.
Some are professionals working in fields like science, math, or the arts.

But despite all those differences, there are four things they all have in common.

1️⃣ First, they’ve overcome their own academic or learning challenges.
They understand what it’s like to struggle — and what it takes to grow.

2️⃣ Second, they’re creative problem-solvers.
They can present ideas in multiple ways to support students with different learning profiles.

3️⃣ Third, they have a deep passion for their subject.
Whether it’s math, science, literacy, or the arts, they bring enthusiasm and expertise that inspires students.

4️⃣ And lastly, they lead with empathy, patience, persistence, and connection.

Because at the heart of tutoring is creating a space where children feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and learn.

When students feel supported and connected, learning becomes empowering.

And that’s the ultimate goal of every great educator.

I’m going to say something most parents don’t like to hear…

Many kids today aren’t reading as much as they used to, and it’s not because they can’t.

It’s because they have everything else competing for their attention. And when everything is immediate and fast, the slower, quieter experience of reading can start to feel unfamiliar.

But there’s something really special about picking up a hard copy book.

Walking up to a bookshelf.
Looking at the covers.
Judging a book by its cover.
Finding a title that sparks curiosity.

Reading isn’t just about words on a page.

It’s about imagination.
Creativity.
Storytelling.
Building comprehension.
It’s the thrill of flipping the page.
Sliding the bookmark in.
Wondering what will happen next.
This is how kids naturally grow as readers.

So when parents tell me their child isn’t reading, one of the first questions I ask is:

What does reading look like in your home?
Do you read together?
Do they see you reading?
Do they read to you?

Literacy often starts at home, in the environment you create.

A simple strategy: a home reading challenge.

Even 15 minutes a day.
Add a marble to a jar or a sticker to a chart for each session.
Celebrate consistency, not just the reward.

Because if we want curious, confident learners, we need to bring books back into the center of our homes.
Libraries.
Bookshelves.
Reading together.

Sometimes all it takes is one book a child can’t put down.

Some kids avoid numbers, refuse worksheets, and give up quickly on math.

The problem?
When children believe they’re “just not a math kid,”
their confidence drops, progress slows,
and fear of mistakes takes over.

The truth? Everyone can improve in math.

✅️ Use visuals and step-by-step examples
✅️Encourage mistakes as part of learning
✅️Celebrate effort, not just answers

Math isn’t about innate talent.
It’s about growth, persistence, and support.

If your child struggles with math, don’t let them feel stuck.

The climb might be steep, but the view from the top is worth it. 🎓✨

Aristotle hit the nail on the head: the process of learning isn’t always easy. It takes discipline, late nights, and the courage to tackle subjects that feel “bitter” or overwhelming at first. But that moment when a difficult concept finally clicks? That’s the sweet fruit of your labor.

Whether it’s breaking down complex equations, mastering a new language, or building confidence in social studies, our personalized approach turns academic struggle into long-term success.

We don’t just help with homework; we help students build the habits and resilience they need to thrive.

How we support our students:

🚨 Pull over! The Grammar Police are on patrol today. 🚨

We’ve all been there: You’re typing a quick email, a group chat message, or an essay, and your fingers just… slip. You type “their” when you meant “there,” or you accidentally write “should of” because that’s how it sounds in your head.

Let’s be honest: Grammar is tricky! And sometimes, our brains prioritize speed over spelling. But here at My Tutor Time, we’re firm believers that a little bit of polish goes a long way.

Whether you’re crafting a formal essay or just trying to sound a bit more professional in your DMs, getting these “Big Three” errors out of your vocabulary is a total game-changer.✏️

In this carousel, we’re tackling:

✅ The classic They’re/Their/There mix-up

✅ The difference between It’s vs. Its

✅ Why we must retire the phrase “should of”

Swipe through to see the corrections, and let us know: which one of these used to trip you up the most?

Your child comes home frustrated.

They spent hours on a project…
And the grade isn’t what they expected.
Now they don’t want to try again.

This is so common.

When kids fear failure, they start avoiding challenges. And that can limit their growth.

So what do you do?
Instead of fixing it for them…

Try asking:
“What did you learn?”
“What could you try differently next time?”

Help them focus on progress, effort, and reflection, not perfection.

Setbacks aren’t failures.
They’re stepping stones.
They’re opportunities to build resilience and confidence.

Let me say this clearly:
Grades have a place.

But here’s what I see far too often:
Children who don’t actually need additional pressure… carrying it anyway.

Children who are naturally curious, thoughtful, capable — but already anxious about disappointing their parents.

And that’s where we need to pause. Because if from an early age the main message is:
“Results make us proud.”

Then effort becomes secondary.
Inquiry becomes secondary.
Joy becomes secondary.

When instead, we anchor our parenting in effort — in care, in preparation, in persistence — something powerful happens.

Children learn:
✨ Learning is valuable in itself.
✨ Trying hard is admirable.
✨ Growth is something to be proud of.

And ironically?
When effort becomes the focus, strong outcomes often follow.

Because children who love learning take ownership.

They ask better questions.
They engage more deeply.
They aren’t paralyzed by fear of failure.

That doesn’t mean we ignore grades.
It means we balance them.
Strategy matters. Preparation matters.

But pressure without purpose can erode curiosity.

Our goal — especially when children don’t yet need that high-stakes push — should be to foster a love of learning. A spirit of inquiry. A sense of capability.

Effort is within their control.

Outcomes are influenced by many factors.
When we consistently show that we value the thought, time, and care they put into something — we build conviction. And that conviction carries them much further than pressure ever will.

If you’re navigating that balance between achievement and wellbeing, and want practical strategies tailored to your family, visit our website or send me a DM. I’d love to support you. 💛

We talk a lot about strategies, programs, tutors, and academic skills.

But one of the most powerful things you can give your child — especially when it comes to learning — is your presence.

Not perfect answers.
Not constant correction.
Not pressure.

Presence.

I worked with a family whose youngest child asked “why” about everything. Her parents were overwhelmed by the constant questions. But when they began slowing down — making eye contact, pausing their phones, and truly engaging in the conversation — something shifted.

Her confidence grew.
Her curiosity expanded.
And learning became connection.

Being present doesn’t mean hours of one-on-one time. It means intentional moments.

And when you’re present, here are three simple ways to spark curiosity:

✨ Ask open-ended questions back.
Instead of rushing to answer, say: “Why do you think that happens?” or “How could we find out?” This teaches your child to think, not just receive information.

✨ Let them teach you something.
Whether it’s dinosaurs, hockey stats, baking, or coding — invite them to explain it to you. When children become the expert, their curiosity deepens and their confidence expands.

✨ Encourage real-world investigation.
Cook together and talk about measurements. Watch a documentary and pause to discuss. Go outside and observe nature. Curiosity grows when learning feels alive and shared.

Curiosity isn’t built through pressure.
It’s built through presence.
