On Persons Day, we recognize a pivotal legal milestone in Canadian history.

In 1929, Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby — known as the Famous Five — challenged the narrow interpretation of the Constitution that excluded women from being recognized as “persons.”

Their determination brought the case to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council of Great Britain in London, Canada’s highest court of appeal at the time, who ultimately overruled Canada’s Supreme Court.

This landmark decision opened the door for women to be appointed to the Senate and helped advance gender equality across Canada.

The Honourable Judy Erola helped advance gender equality in Canada’s legal framework through public service and federal leadership. ⚖

As the first woman Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, she championed women’s equal participation in Canadian society.

She successfully advocated to have section 28 included in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, helping ensure the rights and freedoms apply equally to men and women.

This Women’s History Month, we recognize Judy Erola’s leadership and her role in strengthening constitutional protections for gender equality in Canada.
