Writing alum Adam Hussein joins CBC comedy The Service 🎥
From the classroom to the writers' room!
Congratulations to Vancouver Film School Writing alum and part-time instructor Adam Hussein, who has been staffed on CBC's upcoming comedy-drama The Service.
Created by Cardinal and Snowpiercer showrunner Aubrey Nealon, The Service blends espionage, workplace comedy, and heartfelt storytelling in a fresh take on life inside Canada's intelligence community.
Adam's latest milestone builds on an already impressive career that includes participating in Pacific Screenwriting Program's prestigious Scripted Series Lab. Now, he's bringing his voice to a nationally produced television series while continuing to inspire the next generation of screenwriters as a VFS instructor.
We're proud to see our alumni shaping Canadian television and helping tell the stories that audiences will be talking about next. Congratulations, Adam – we can't wait to watch The Service next year! 🎉

How to Make a Game: Lessons from Building Atomic Overdrive 🎮
What does it really take to make a game?
It's tempting to think it starts with a brilliant idea. But as VFS Game Design student José Miguel Carrillo discovered while collaborating on Atomic Overdrive, great games are shaped through constant iteration, collaboration, and a willingness to rethink your best ideas.
For our latest blog, we sat down with José and VFS Head of Game Design Christopher Mitchell to explore the four-month journey of developing a multiplayer anti-gravity racing game from the ground up.
From prototyping the hardest technical challenge first to embracing playtesting, cutting features, and learning when to stop polishing, their experience offers practical lessons for anyone interested in game development.
Whether you're dreaming of becoming a designer, programmer, artist, or producer, this article goes beyond theory to show how real games come together through collaboration, iteration, and persistence.

ANIMATION MASTERCLASS: 30+ years of industry insight from VFS’s Head of Animation, Colin Giles 💡
Many think learning animation starts with software. After more than 30 years in the industry, Colin Giles, VFS’s Head of Animation, believes it starts somewhere else entirely: observation.
From climbing into a dumpster to recover discarded Disney animation drawings early in his career to mentoring the next generation of animators at Vancouver Film School, Colin has spent decades refining what it really takes to succeed in the industry.
In our latest long-form feature, he shares the lessons every aspiring animator should know – from why professionals still teach the humble bouncing ball, to the importance of feedback, performance, collaboration, and why technology should always serve the artist, not the other way around.
Whether you're taking your first steps into animation or looking to strengthen your craft, this is a masterclass built on three decades of real-world experience.
