A little late on the post, but we couldn't miss sharing some of the highlights from our Canada Day performance in Richmond 🇨🇦🥁

While our usual spot in Downtown Vancouver was reserved for FIFA, we had an absolute blast bringing our dragon dance, lion dance, and kung fu demonstrations to the community in Richmond, BC. It was also an honour to perform alongside thousands of drummers across the country for the 9th annual Canada Day Drumming celebration. For those who don't know, this event has earned a place in the Guinness World Records for bringing drummers from all across the country together to celebrate our great nation.

We want to give a big shout-out to the organizers as well as the other talented performers we shared the stage with.

This was one of our favourite lion dance wedding performances this year thanks to the excitement of the crowd. Our lion dancers fed off that energy and it really helped make this performance a memorable one. Burnaby's Riverway Clubhouse was also the perfect choice of venue with its spacious design and bathing of natural light.

Wedding season is officially here, and there's no better way to make a splash on your special day than with a lion dance blessing! We want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to one of our first weddings of the 2026 season, Arlene and Alan. It was an honour performing for you two and we wish you all the best in your long journey together as one 🧧

And of course, Richmond's Empire Seafood Restaurant was the perfect choice for a wedding venue. Keep an eye out for where our lions will travel to next! We will be showcasing our lion dance skills at plenty of weddings, community events, and special celebrations all summer long!

Chau Luen wasn’t done yet at Can-Am – aside from our 9 medals and grand championship trophy in traditional kung fu, our lion dance team also took home the hardware with the Best Overall Performance trophy for the lion dance exhibition 🏆

Massive congratulations to Kaitlyn, Leanne, Ellen, Carissa, Eva, and Quinn (most of whom form our award-winning all-female team) on their impressive victory. This was their first year competing together as a team, and they dazzled the crowd with their original routine, “To the Moon and Back.”

They hope to be back again next year (possibly competing alongside a second Chau Luen team) to inspire the next generation of young female lion dancers.

Nine medals and a grand championship. We are so proud of our team at the 2026 Can-Am International Martial Arts Championships on their amazing achievements:

🏆🥇🥇 Ellen won two gold medals in the female 18+ division, winning both the “empty hand” and “short weapon” categories. She also was awarded the grand championship trophy for scoring the highest overall amongst females over 18.

🥇🥇 Kelvin also took home two gold medals, one each in the “short weapon” and “empty hand” categories for males over 35.

🥇🥉 Quinn was awarded two medals as well, claiming gold in the “short weapon” category and a hard-fought bronze medal in the “empty hand” category for males aged 18+.

🥇 Kaitlyn won her first ever gold medal in the “short weapon” category for females aged 15-17.

🥇 Dalton took the top step of the podium against a solid field, winning a gold medal in the “empty hand” category for males aged 9-11.

🥇 Beta scored the first gold medal in his martial arts career, finishing first in the “short weapon” category for males aged 9-11.

Congratulations to all of our winners – we are incredibly proud of their achievements and excited to see what the future holds for each of them in their kung fu journey!

Using our performances to make a meaningful impact in the community is one of our top priorities, so we’re always honoured to perform for the generous donors at the Scotiabank Feast of Fortune Gala for the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation and Providence Health Care.

This glamourous event raised well over $2.5 million dollars that will go far in improving healthcare for thousands of people living in Metro Vancouver, and we were privileged to be invited to be a part of it for the third straight year.

We never forget our roots or our community involvement! In a tradition as old as time, we gave individual performances for the lovely seniors living at Chau Luen Tower. Though they often see us train as our practice area is a shared communal space, we always give them an opportunity to receive a personalized performance at their front door as part of our Lunar New Year festivities.

After performing for two of the society buildings that make up the five last names under the Chau Luen Society’s umbrella (Tam and Hui), we go floor-to-floor and door-to-door, performing a lion dance for every senior in the tower that signs up.

This event means so much to us as we get to connect and give thanks to the seniors who share their space with us and encourage us as we work hard to improve our lion dance and kung fu skills. We’re committed to our seniors, and to see them smile and cheer as we give them blessings for the coming year is always the most heartwarming experience.

We had an incredible time at CF Pacific Centre for our Year of the Horse performance! It’s always a special experience to bring both dragon and lion dance into the heart of downtown Vancouver, especially if it’s for a free performance that lets us connect with the community.

Beyond the main show, our favourite part was hitting the long list of Pacific Centre’s businesses for a traditional Choy Cheng blessing. Seeing the surprise and smiles on the faces of shoppers and shopowners was the icing on the cake.

A huge thank you to the team at Cadillac Fairview having us, and to everyone who stopped their shopping to cheer us on.

With the excitement and enthusiasm that kids bring, one performance that always stands out is our annual show at the Granville Island Kids Market. With two lions and an energetic God of Fortune entertaining the crowd, hundreds of kids learned about the joy of the Lunar New Year and had a blast celebrating the Year of the Horse with us.

The pink lion (with members from our all-female lion dance team) was a really big hit, with many young girls petting it and taking photos, some of whom were interested in joining the team to try lion dancing.

We hope we can continue inspiring boys and girls of all ages to learn more about our traditional cultural practices and look forward to coming back again next year.

Chau Luen Athletics has had a partnership with the Sunset on Fraser BIA for years, and we’re always thrilled for a chance to perform for all of the local businesses along Fraser Street. With its diverse selection of shops and the unique challenges that they present, it’s always an enjoyable experience for both the shopowners and our talented lion dance team.

Special thanks again to our junior team from Templeton Secondary for their help in giving business blessings. We are looking forward to performing again next year!
