A toxic work environment in childcare settings can affect educator well-being, team relationships, program quality, and ultimately children and families. Often, the signs develop gradually and become normalized over time, which can make them difficult to recognize.

Some common signs include:

✳️Poor Communication
✳️High Levels of Burnout
✳️Lack of Psychological Safety
✳️Inconsistent Leadership
✳️Unrealistic Expectations
✳️Lack of Respect for Educators
✳️High Staff Turnover
✳️Emotional Impact on Educators

Healthy Childcare Environments Often Include

Open respectful communication
Collaborative problem solving
Opportunities for reflection and growth
Supportive leadership
Clear expectations and boundaries
Recognition of educator well-being
A culture where educators feel safe, heard, and valued
These topics can also create meaningful discussion opportunities during educator or administrator professional development sessions focused on team culture, communication, retention, and workplace wellness.

Stepping into administration has been one of the most rewarding learning experiences of my career. Along the way, these 5 lessons have stood out the most:

Delegation is vital — you cannot do everything alone, and empowering others creates stronger outcomes.

Every educator has individual needs — taking the time to understand and support each person matters.

Effective communication is essential — clarity, honesty, and consistency build trust.

A cohesive team culture doesn’t happen by accident — it takes intentionality, collaboration, and positivity.

Consistency matters — showing up the same way each day builds reliability and respect.

Still learning, still growing, and grateful for the journey.

Circle Time Isn’t Working… Here’s Why 👇

If circle time feels chaotic, disengaging, or like you’re constantly redirecting… it’s not the children—it’s the setup.

Here are a few common reasons it’s falling flat:

✨ The group is too large
Not every child thrives in big groups. Smaller, more intentional gatherings create space for participation and connection.

✨ Expectations aren’t developmentally appropriate
Sitting still, listening for long periods, waiting turns… that’s a lot. Especially for younger children.

✨ It’s going on too long
If you’re losing them halfway through, that’s your answer. Shorter, meaningful experiences > long, forced ones.

✨ The content isn’t engaging
Worksheets, flashcards, or rigid plans don’t invite curiosity. Children need hands-on, interactive, and responsive experiences.

✨ It’s educator led instead of child-responsive
Circle time shouldn’t feel like a performance. Follow their interests, invite their ideas, and be flexible.

💡 Shift the mindset:
Circle time isn’t about control—it’s about connection, community, and shared experiences.

What if circle time became optional, fluid, and actually enjoyable?

Stop using dough tools just for “playdough time” 👀

Dough design wheels from can become so much more when we shift the intention behind how we offer them.

✨ Exploration (open-ended)
Offer the wheels with dough and invite children to freely explore. Rolling, pressing, and experimenting with patterns supports sensory development, fine motor skills, and curiosity—no outcome, just discovery.

✨ Provocation (printmaking)
Add paint, paper, and a simple invitation to create prints. Now the wheels become tools for representation—children can explore pattern, repetition, and design while expressing their ideas in new ways.

Same material. Different experiences. Deeper learning.

It’s not about the tool—it’s about how we invite children to use it.

How might you shift this in your environment?
