UBC's geoscience undergraduate club. The George Mercer (G.M.) Since 1921 the G.M. The G.M. Dawson City, YT, and Dawson Creek, BC, are named in his honour.
Dawson club is a student-run club for Geology and Geophysics students, based at the department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, UBC, Vancouver. Dawson Club has maintained to put forth the best talent in the geological sciences from the University of British Columbia. Our mandate is simple: coalesce enthusiastic undergraduates with faculty/industry volunteers and embark on invaluable geoscience-based f
ield trips enhancing UBC Earth and Ocean Science student’s value before they enter the work force. Dawson club encompasses the undergraduate geosciences community at the University of British Columbia, who are involved in many aspects of student life within the department. It is the clubs primary goal to coalesce enthusiastic undergraduates with faculty and industry, facilitated by providing resources to students, initiating bonding within the geosciences community and embarking on invaluable geology based field trips. Some of the past highlights include:
WIUGC: Unmistakably the most anticipated event of 2013 as the Dawson Club hosted the Western Inter-University Geosciences Conference in Vancouver, BC. WIUGC brings together both undergraduate and graduate students to present their research, connecting with industry and other students from western Canada and the northwestern United States who share a passion for the geosciences. Field Trips: In addition to the recently reinstated field trip to Hawaii, we will be independently hosting field trips, as well as collaborating with the Society of Economic Geologists Student Chapter to provide students with a number of opportunities to investigate the dynamic geologic setting Vancouver is situated in. Student Resources: Providing resume workshops, industry nights, level 1 first aid course, PAL gun course, APEG information session and mineral identification kits. Events: In addition to WIUGC, the Dawson club plans on maintaining their reputation for strong involvement in Roundup 2013, UBC REC sports teams, intra-departmental and inter-university collaborative social events, and for the first time in the Dawson Clubs history, a presence at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada in Toronto, ON. The club is named after George Mercer Dawson, a Canadian geologist, surveyor, author, teacher, civil servant, geographer, anthropologist, and palaeontologist renowned for creating the first maps of the Yukon used in the Klondike Gold rush. A strong character and remarkable scientist, Dawson did not let his deformed back and stunted growth (from tuberculosis as a child) limit his physical capabilities in leading numerous expeditions across treacherous terrains, challenging even for the physically fit.
